I was wondering how many of you carry when hunting - where legal of course - and what calibre, gun and holster do you use.
What type of game do you usually shoot?

I carry and hunt with a Super Blackhawk in.44mag. Carried in a shoulder holster. I also carry a model 586 / .357 when shotgun hunting. Both setups while hunting for whitetail deer and or Black Bear. There are now wild pigs in the area where I hunt but I have yet to see one.

Never entered the woods without my Mod 19. Have a shoulder holster and hip holster. I have to take that back from age 14--19 did not own a handgun it was the law of course.

I am in the travel light group,if hand gun hunting 44 mag,if rifle hunting I don't need the weight of a big hand gun.

Carrying while deer hunting

I have carried ever since the late 1980's when I was attacked by two rouge Doberman pinchers while muzzleloading for deer. I came up on them just after they killed a doe. They didn't want me around, both came running towards me snarling and at 10 steps I shot one, only shot I had, turned the rifle around to use as a club and backed quickly to a very large oak tree to have at my back. As the smoke cleared the other one had fled the scene! I shakily reloaded and walked backwards toward granddad's position. He of course thought I had a deer. After he was treed while bow hunting later that year we both started packing, me a 22 and he carried his S&W 36 snub. You weren't allowed to in Ohio at the time but We didn't think the law enforcement could protect us, thus we protected ourselves.

I now pack a 357 mag SP 101 3 inch.

I carried a 6" model 19 for the first 4 or 5 years I owned it...but up to that time, I'd never killed a buck, so I quit lugging it. Figured that if 5 shots from my '06 didn't take care of it, I'd just pop in another magazine in the 760...so today I don't care a handgun while deer hunting, unless that's the primary weapon I intend to use.

Sometimes

I carried on state land. Despite the collective delusion that all hunters are sportsmen, there were too many instances of hunters attempting to muscle and or intimidate other hunters in an effort to force them off prime spots, including adding phony posters to state lands. There have also been violent incidents directed against hunters by anti-hunting extremists.

When I carried, it was usually an S&W Model 65, 3" or a Glock 19, always carried thoroughly concealed as it was my ace-in-the-hole.

When I joined a hunting club, hunting private lands, I stopped carrying the handgun as it was just extra baggage.

J frame with first round snake shot. Also usually a G19, but in pig country a G21. Reloads all around.

629 on my hip in a cross draw Desantis if I'm doing upland bird. Have missed some opportunities to take shots at bucks with rifle in short, fast windows of visibility, so I may actually start carrying it while doing deer as well. But it's going to be some extra weight if I do.

I carry when hunting, usually one of my S&W 45 colts. Have shot probably 10 or so deer with pistols. Here you could go elk hunting with a 2" barreled 22 revolver loaded with shorts and be legal. Not smart but legal. No caliber restrictions in MT. They talked about outlawing the 50 BMG rounds because some guys use them for extreme range elk sniping, but, didn't think it was really a problem.

Most states got way to many rules. Funny thing is many states allow archery and outlaw things like the 223. I find that kind of ignorant. If you have enough skill to humanly kill a deer with a bow how hard is it to do with a 223. If your going to pot shot with a 223. you'll do the same with a bow.

I personally always use plenty of gun. Been a long time since something didn't quickly drop with one shot for me.

When I hunt deer, I don't need a center fire handgun: I have an infinitely more powerful rifle in my hands.

That said, I often carry a pre war Colt Woodsman (less frequently a M34).

I always carry my model 63 2" in a clam shell shoulder holster, I've had several wolves run right toward my ground stand not knowing I was there.
The 63 snub is a great little noise maker for warning shots.
