How many have bought a firearm just because they had ammo on hand?

Nope. Haven't quite reached that level of desperation...yet.

Was in Cabela's a while back and the only ammo they had on hand was a couple of boxes of 7-30 Waters, a box of .35 Whelan, and a few boxes of 27 Nosler.

I have to admit that for just a tiny, brief moment, the thought crossed my mind, "Should I buy a 7-30 Waters rifle, a 35 Whelan rifle, or a 27 Nosler rifle just because that's all the ammo that's available?" Then, fortunately, common sense took over and, after looking at their stock of guns, I very seriously doubt Cabela's even had any rifles stocked in those calibers.:D

How the heck do you wind up buying ammo that you don't have a weapon to use it ?

This is not a wise decision.

I don't buy this post.

In the long run you are going to lose money.

I haven't purchased a firearm because I have ammo but I have purchased a firearm because I have set of dies in the right caliber.

I have a stash of 12 gauge reduced recoil 00 buckshot as well as target loads and my two riot guns with 20" barrels were both made in the 1930's. So I bought a used Mossberg 500 with an 18.5" barrel and I hope to take it soon to the trap line with the target loads and the practice range with the buckshot. I don't care if wear out the Mossberg (an unlikely possibility), but I would be bummed if overuse put the antiques out of whack.

Its easy if you buy, sell, trade stuff. I've bought or traded for "package deals" of ammo that included calibers I don't shoot just to get ones that I do.

The reality of it is if you buy a gun to go with some ammo you already have it is really more about having a good excuse to buy another gun.

Make sense now? :D

I bought a box of vintage ammo just because the price was too good to pass up.

Now I need to find a rifle that shoots .219 Zipper!

Not only have I bought a gun because I had ammo,,,,, I own a 264 win mag. because I got a set of dies in a box of stuff I traded for. Took me 6 months to find brass after I got the rifle.

For years I had 6 rounds of 44 special in the safe...not sure where they came from, but after a bit I had to buy this to shoot them. Then 3 more 44 specials after that.. guilty as charged.

I'm guilty. :o

#1. During that last .22LR shortage, I sold all my .22's, but I still had a bit of ammo left that I wanted to just use up.

I mean that stuff was never going to make a comeback right?

So I bought a cheap rifle with the intent of using up my last 800 rounds and just giving the rifle to a kid when finished.

Thing was so much fun, I now have 8000 rounds and the kids can get their own dang rifle.

#2. I'm getting old and lazy and I didn't feel like packing around a Glock 20 brick in the woods all day.

Sold the gun but still had 1000 Hornady jacketed .40 bullets left over.

Got a much lighter .40 S&W Shield instead. :)

I've done something similar. More than once, I've found a nice rifle stock, bought it and then had to find or have built a barreled action to fit in it.

Almost pulled the trigger on an LCP 380 for $475 since it came with extras including 9 boxes (50 rounds each) of 380 ammo. Plan was to keep the ammo and use the gun for a paperweight:D

I don't know if this counts as "on hand", but a former partner found a .45 ACP round lying on the ground outside our ambulance station and gave it to me. We shared the building with the police department and someone dropped a round.

I didn't have anything in .45ACP, so figured I better buy something.

Thats how i ended up with my K98, accidentally bought ammo that was supposed to be 30-06 but the guy bagged up the 8mm instead, found out later. So back in the day I drove to Springfield Sporter in Penns Run PA and purchased a Yugo re-work
