How many have bought a firearm just because they had ammo on hand?

About 35 years ago, I went in to one of those old "Service Merchandise" stores to buy a brick (500 rounds) of 22lr.

I was given 500 rounds of 22 mag instead.

I kept it in hopes of finding a Ruger Single Six convertible.

I never found one to my liking and subsequently decided that 22 mag was a better cartridge in a rifle than in a handgun.

A couple of years ago I found a smoking deal on a new Savage 92FSS in 22 mag that I couldn't pass up.

So, yeah, I've done that.

Thought about it last week when I was in a Walmart in NC and they had shotgun shells especially a number of boxes of 410 gauge. Don't own a shotgun but carried one in the day as an LEO. Last spring on a visit to a friends house where I help assess and clean some firearms that the family had been left when the Dad passed there was a vintage Winchester shotgun. Shooting the vintage Winchester pump .410 shotgun was a lot of fun and it is now on my bucket list.

Accurate Bolts

"How many have bought a firearm just because they had ammo on hand?"

No ammo, but last Fall, got a 2019 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight
Bolt Action Rifle, with the Controlled Round Feed massive external Claw
on the Bolt, in the inherently accurate 270 Winchester Short Magnum.

I got me shooting more of my regular 270 Winchester in a 2004 Remington 700 ADL, too.

Both are stock, nothing done to them other than torqueing the action screws
with my in/lbs Torque Wrench. Both have turned to be inherently accurate,
with 130gr bullets, and using IMR 4350, IMR 4064, RL-19.

They started up my hording of reloading components too.

Yes sir...... a few months ago I found myself with a bunch of reloads..... 38 special and 357 Magnum and no firearm, so I did what any rational person would do and bought a Henry Lever Action 357 to tidy up the ammo department.

How the heck do you wind up buying ammo that you don't have a weapon to use it ?

This is not a wise decision.

I don't buy this post.

In the long run you are going to lose money.

I didn't spend a dime on the ammo. I inherited it.

When I shoot through what I have I can still shoot. 45ACP with half moon clips through the 1917.

And If I choose to sell it. I'll do ok on the Ruger Bisley stainless. 41 Magnum.

Nope, I'm ahead of the game the way I see it.

For years I had 6 rounds of 44 special in the safe...not sure where they came from, but after a bit I had to buy this to shoot them. Then 3 more 44 specials after that.. guilty as charged.

Yeah, and that set of Cokes it's wearing didn't have anything to do with the decision either, I'm sure.

The Cokes were a big part of my decision to buy this one. It started life just like yours, but someone decided to shorten it up a couple of inches. At least they did a decent job of it.

Truth be told, I bought that in 2016 for $750 off a GB auction.....the poor auction pictures helped ID the grips just enough to encourage taking the plunge.

Afew times. About 8 years ago I got 21 boxes of 327 Fed and 32 H&R mag at an auction 2 bucks a box. 4 years ago I got a smoking deal on a new SP101 327...woith 4 boxes of ammo. Gun still unfires. 2 years ago I found my grail gun at the time a S&W 16-4 4inch. 625 bucks with 4 boxes of ammo for 10 dollars each. So I bvought 2 guns because I had the ammo. Many years ago I got a deal on 50 boxes of 22 mag. Didn't own a 22 mag...2 weeks later a fellow offered me a really nice H&R M-700 22 mag rifle with 4 mags. I bought it just because. It was the first semi auto 22 mag rifle. Still got it and it is very accurate. I sold one 10 round mag last fall for it for more than I paid for the rifle and ammo.

Yes!.... Guilty of finding another reason to buy another gun LOL. From a free box of 22 Jet that led to a Contender barrel to shoot it in. Since then there has been a trail of various ammo bought in bulk buys, auctions and all the odd stuff that used to walk into the gunshop by people wanting to get rid of it that was the reason (excuse) to buy more guns. Didn't help that I became interested in collecting ammo along the way. Buying old boxes often led to buying everything someone had for sale just to get the stuff I wanted for my collection............... Which led to having a lot of odds and ends, much of which wasn't really collectible but was certainly shootable! And if I didn't already have a gun in whatever caliber I suddenly found myself with then my eyes were looking for one. Only way to control it was try to sell the stuff at a gunshow before I actually bought another gun.............Doesn't always work though..

I've done that. I came into 10 cases of .380 ammo and didn't own a .380. I sold a few cases to friends that did but I was still left with 4 cases so I bought a Glock 42 to shoot it up with. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was very accurate and a real pleasure to shoot. I'm down to 2 cases and I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of that pistol.

I put together an AR-47 because I had tonnage of x39 for my SKS.

I was on an AR kick at the time though...

I haven't bought any new firearms because the ammunition for them was not available. I was looking at one of those 5.7mm handguns but no ammo, so no purchase.

I bought a good bit of .45 GAP for my revolvers. I have really been thinking about buying a Glock when things get back to normal and prices come down.........

I started to say I've never done that, but now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the 100 rounds of 45 ACP that I had for 10 years influenced me to by an XDm in that caliber.
