At a minimum I would say four per gun. Although, I don't think there is any one correct answer.
I actually have five for my .40 Shield (four 7rnd and one 6 rnd) and four for my .40 FS M&P. My wife has a 9mm Shield but only has the two factory magazines it came with. I like four at the range so i can shoot for a while and then reload all magazines at once, then enjoy some more shooting.
At home I keep two magazines for each gun loaded with Federal home defense JHP for protection. That gives me three guns and 62 rnds to get the job done. If I cant do that, I'm screwed
When I carry my Sheild, I also carry carry one extra 7rnd mag which gives me a total of 15 rnds.
