How Many Musicians Are Here?

I used to be a classical pianist with some forays into pipe organ, flute, and recorder. Nowadays I keep a Tele and a Strat around to fool around with, mostly in the blues genre. Both parents were music teachers and symphony musicians, so I kind of grew up with music being a big part of life.

OK, sorry but I can't resist.
Drummer jokes..:D
1. How do you know there's a drummer at your door?......
The knock on the door gets faster and faster.
2. How do you know there's a drummer at your door?......
The knock gets slower and slower.
3. How do you know there's a drummer at your door?......
The knock speeds up and slows down.:D:D
Sorry drummers I have an affliction.

Do 'inactive' musicians count.....

Music was a big part of both of our lives. We both played several instruments and we both sang seriously for years. Enough to do opera and stage music as well as traveling to places around the state to give concerts.

Piano and guitar were my main instruments, but I could pick up most anything (that you didn't have to BLOW) and figure it out in a short while.

We did this for many years and thought that we would always be active in some way or another. Well, life happened, and we were so intensely distress when our son took up the street life. We concentrated solely on getting him through those years. He's fine now, very ambitious and motivated. But, the spark went out in music. I still like listening to music but the urge to make it just isn't there.

I've got my grand piano in the front room and my son keep asking what I'm going to do with it. I tell him I'm going to keep it until I get where I can play it again. If I don't, it will be part of my estate. I guarantee you that as soon as I got rid of it, I'd miss it pretty bad.

A lady came by the other day and played some for us while we listened. I was hoping that might be a seed, but so far, no playee. All I do is sing around the house.

PS As soon as I finished this I found myself singing 'Una Furtiva Lagrima'. It may happen yet. :)

PS: My wife rarely sings and she used to be a songbird.:(

My wife bought me an inexpensive 5 string banjo for my birthday a few years ago, but I don't play it enough. I tried one lesson, the guy was a good player, but our hour consisted of him playing and me sitting and listening. Never went back. I play in my garage where nobody else has to listen, and can fumble through a handful of songs. I got tired of people asking if I could play Dueling Banjos, so I found a version of it where the banjo plays both parts. Still working on that one, but its fun.

Teaching myself is slow and tedious, and I'm probably not learning good technique (never mind chords or basic music theory). But it passes the time and a bottle of whiskey at my elbow sometimes gives me the illusion of progress!

My wife's cousin is a great guitar player and he let me try his Deering 5 string once. I can say this: I'm better at banjo than he is haha. Wow that Deering sounds good, and it is so much easier to play than mine.

My wife has played fiddle since she was 5 and teaches Irish out of our home. Its tough trying to keep up to her, she can pick up any instrument and mess around for a couple minutes before she's hammering out tunes.
