Since so few answered the OP's question directly or even qualified for "never", seems like any real answer would be better served by a poll. What we have is more like "why not buy new?", which is what we have heard ad nauseum before...ILS, MIM, quality, don't-make-'em-like-they-used-to, yadda-yadda?

One with the OP's premise could also ask, "how many are like me and too poor to buy new?" (not that used S&W revolvers are cheap, by any means).

Edit of my Post #69 above:

Most of the "used" S&Ws I bought over the years .....

Were like getting a 1964 Corvette with 500 miles; which had been stored in a heated garage since 1966.

Offered for sale; for at, or less than original MSRP, in 1998........

Why buy new!!!!!!!!!!

I would buy new if I was looking for something that is currently made. I think I've bought 6 or 7 new guns out of a collection of 55 or so. Mostly I like older guns so that means I shop pawn stores and gun shops for pieces I couldn't afford when I was young. I have an IL piece and haven't had any issues with it. If i wanted something new the current models would be just fine.

new SW

I have eight of them and bought all new.
Never saw one used that I wanted or thought was a good deal
Wait a minute, I did buy one 317 used and ended up selling it.

Over the years about half a dozen new ones, but lately the purchases have been used guns.

None for me

I have never purchased a new S&W revolver, not that I wouldn't in the right situation. Though I prefer no IL, I am not nuts about it. Just like the older ones, and though I currently own 8 (I know, a piker on this forum...) and have bought and sold a dozen more, all have been used. Got them made from 1953 to 1998, and all are great guns.

If you think the new ones are expensive, you should see the prices on the old ones! I've never owned a new one and doubt I ever will, but my 'old' one (ca 1996) was about 30-35% more than comparable new ones. Granted, it was unused near as I can tell, but still...finding 'bargains' in the revolver aisle takes some patience and skill, I think. I imagine one day buying a revolver will be like buying a fighter aircraft--even with the annual budget of the DoD in your pocket, you can still only afford to buy 1.

I would buy new if I was looking for something that is currently made.

"That's the thing of it", right there.

Last "new" S&W for me was 1994: unfluted 657 classic. It was $400, and for another $400, that dealer sold me a 1066 along with it.

I could shoot my 57 better so I eventually sold it. I could not believe how much that gun depreciated when I tried to sell it. Since then, only used for me.

Only one, a 629-1 six inch after reading the report in one of the gun magazine after they came out in the mid 70's. Rest have been used.

I have purchased two new S&W revolvers, a 686 and 629. I consider them my "beater" revolvers. Nothing wrong with them, they shoot great.

However I much prefer S&W revolvers that are P&R with no MIM or locks, so all of my recent S&W revolver purchases have been guns with 33+ years on them.

I've never bought a new S&W. I never will buy a new S&W. I only buy S&W made in the 80's when the quality was excellent.

I could be wrong, but I feel like the models produced in the "Performance Center" approach comparable quality to the older models. However, the price is 40% more than a used S&W.

Very hard to justify dropping $1,000 on a revolver when a $500-600 used gun shoots just as well and looks classier.

I am drawn to the older Smiths, pre-lock to be specific. I don't do safe queens so I buy used. I have never bought a new rifle for much the same reason. I like them blue with wood stocks, I favor the older Rugers with the tang safety. I did buy a new Beretta 20 gauge Silver Pigeon a couple years ago. I would have bought used, but could not find one.

You are making my brain hurt! I can't remember ever buying a NEW Smith revolver. Other brands yes. Bob

new s&w

S&W is was a classy gun. I have bought new and used, but I will never buy one with that stupid looking (and stupid functioning) lock. I really like some of the new guns, they tempt me. Until I see that ridiculous piece of pop-up tin by the hammer and the ugly scratch in the shape of an L on the side by the cylinder release. Then it's easy to put back down.

I think there are two entirely different types of buyers represented here which certainly is not a bad thing.

Every firearm I have purchased has been new and for a specific use either SD, target, or hunting. I tend to be slow to make a purchase unless there is a need for the item and then hold on to it basically forever. I enjoy a well engineered firearm but see one as a tool primarily.

Many here are collectors or people who want a variety of firearms. For them to purchase new, they would be spending a mint to scratch that itch.

The only problem I have is that after reading posts on this site, I have a terrible urge to get one of the model 10 police turn in revolvers as a shooter which is really not needed. You are all enablers :)
