17+1 in the gun; spare with extension @ 21. 39 total is enough. Civilian.

I primarily carry revolvers with one extra reload. But on the rare occasion I carry a semi-auto it is in a shoulder holster with a double magazine carrier which helps balance out the load and it's not too shabby having 52 rounds ready to go.

The purpose of your little gun is to fight your way back to your big gun . . .

Muss, that's true, it's one of Clint Smith's maxims but, as a rule, most folks don't carry long guns in their vehicles. Some folks do, I get that, I used to carry a rifle in the trunk of my car routinely. I don't anymore, maybe I should. But fighting my way to my long guns is a home defense concept to me, not a driving concept - if I have to pull a gun I probably do NOT want to get out of my vehicle.

Don't get out much these days, not even to the range, thanks to the recent shortage. So, one spare mag's been enough up to this point.

I carry a SW40VE with one spare magazine plus a Ruger LCP with a spare magazine of its own.

I didn’t vote because how many spare mags I carry vary. When I’m around my property I tend to go sans an extra mag or speed loader. If I’m heading into the nearest local burg (pop. aprox. 8000) I always have one with me, and if I’m heading into “the big city” (as little as possible) I will always take two.

Cooler weather means I can carry more mags or speed strips in my jacket pockets.

I don't carry a spare. I have confidence in the mag in My gun. In 1976 when I was at Gunsite the first time I asked Mr Cooper why He didn't carry a spare. His reply was " If I need more than 8 rounds to solve the problem, there is a good possibility that I won't survive the conflict."

As much as I admire Mr. Cooper I ran out of ammo in the middle of a gunfight in 1974 (only had one reload of six). After that I carried a box of 50, plus my duty speedloaders, w/my service revolver. When we transitioned to the Glock I purchased extra mags to include the 33 rounder. In retirement I still carry extra ammo in my car’s center console.

I voted "two magazines", but the answer for me is "it depends on the gun".

For my Colt 1911 (.45), I carry two extra for a total of 23 rounds.

For my S&W 469, I carry one extra for a total of 25 rounds.

For my S&W Sigma, I carry one extra for a total of 31 rounds.

For my AR Pistol, which I carry in the vehicle when on road trips, it's one 20-rounder in the gun plus four additional in the case.

Except for the AR, it's not that I think I need that much ammo. It's for the malfunction issue. The magazine is the weakest link in the chain for semi-autos.

With a 10rd limit, I carry 1 spare. I may toss another into the truck just in case. I do live in a pretty violent state, though my zone is relatively stable.
