Only carry what the weapon holds. Wondering for concealed carry if we had to go to court. Will they say since you have the loaded weapon and a spare mag your looking for a fight. My thinking is if I had a spare mag with me how would I load it running the other way. Picture this a 6 ft. 185 lb. 75 year old running trying to reload while wetting his self. I'll just go with my 8+1.

Are you aware of any incident ever at any time in which the shooting would have been deemed justified but was prosecuted specifically because the defendant was carrying a reload?

Just one?

Considering the light weight and small size of a reload or two why not, if you don't need it maybe someone else will.

If I feel like I'm going to need to carry a firearm for personal safety, I reconsider and wisely avoid going. Although I have a carry permit, the only time I carry is on the way to the range and on the way back. Even then, I do not ever carry a loaded weapon except at the shooting range. "Just because I can..." is not sufficient justification.

Might just need it in the most unlikely place and time, like a car with an empty gas tank an unloaded weapon. You are not looking for trouble, trouble finds you.

You would not have to be running if you had a spare mag or 2. Fear of Rambo complex? I was driving and started hearing a strange noise, the noise was my 40 cal cartridges falling out of the magazine. The base plate broke and emptied on the floor. You might say what are the chances, I do not know, but It did happen to me. Also a I stated above a minimum of one spare mag. Went on a Montanna bear hunt 9 years ago, 2 rifles, same make, model, caliber, scope + 6 mags. Each mag was cleaned and checked with live fire in both guns, perfect. We drove so no baggage handlers. Went to check zero and the mag would not feed, though it worked perfectly 48 hrs before? Why? Always need at least one spare mag, for rifle, pistol, shotgun, other wise you may have only a single shot or a rock. Be Safe,

AMMO LEFT BEHIND

When I was young pilot ,an old WW2 attack pilot told me " There are two things that do you no good, the fuel you left on the ground and the runway behind you." Always go to END of the runway and takeoff with FULL fuel. Same should be true with EXTRA Mag(s)/ammo.
On my first trip to THUNDER RANCH, Clint Smith said "In a gunfight you never know how many attackers there are and you never know how much ammo they have , always carry extra ammo".
And that is what I do, every day , every where.

I carry what’s in the gun plus two reloads, whatever that may be.
So with the S&W model 65, that’s 18 rounds. With a Browning HiPower, there are 14 in the gun and two spare mags for 40 total.
Due to the front sight getting harder to find, especially at night, I’m looking at going to a Sig P320 with red dot sight. Even with 17+1 in that gun, I’ll carry two spare mags for it.

There are plenty of reasons to carry more ammo besides the ability to shoot more.

If I use the gun, I want to be able to refill it, and quickly. If I use it and survive, I probably just made a lot of enemies and don’t need to be standing around with a partially filled gun waiting for police to answer my 911 call. With a revolver, I may then have only a couple of rounds at most in the gun...after shooting some guy’s brother/some woman’s meal ticket/a gang’s blood brother, any or all of whom can arrive before the law.

With semiautos in particular-
To me, it’s not the number of rounds but the ability to replace the feeding device. If the gun chokes in some way, I want to be able to swap magazines to eliminate the most likely cause.

So why carry two mags instead of just one? Mostly because it makes little difference over carrying one to carry two. There are other reasons, but that’s the main one.

Like I said, there are plenty of reasons for carrying more ammo besides reloading to shoot more. I only gave a couple, but there are plenty.

Thanks for reminding me. I'm guilty of only carrying my snubbie with no reloads. I used to carry an extra bullet in my pocket, like Barney Fife, but lately I haven't been doing that. I need to start again.

Not many.....

Just 2 45 long colt's with hollow points in each. That fills my derringer and it fits in my pocket like a set of car keys. My philosophy is, if it takes more than 2 45LC' I'd better run like hell.:)
