How many rounds do you shoot before cleaning

I clean my M&P15-22 after every trip to the range and have gotten as high as 275 rounds in one trip, and was wondering how many rounds others have found they can put through before "needing" to clean their rifle.

It depends... Belt_Fed was the first one to strip and clean my Ruger pistol since I bought it about 100k rounds ago. The 1522 will require more frequent cleaning. I do shoot a Mini-Mag through it now and then to push some of the crud out of the barrel.:D

The bore will be most accurate when dirty, so leave that alone. The action can be swabbed out now and then but as long as it's not caked shut with crud, it's good to keep firing. I clean all my guns after taking them to the range, except for 22s. They get rode hard and put away dirty and they are none the worse for it.

I average at least a box of 550 bulk per outting at minimum. I do clean my 15 22 after each trip, as some days I can go through upwards of 1k rounds per outting. I clean my barrel EVERY time, and im shooting groups like this picture below, witha clean barrel from around 60-70 yards, with a eotech 552 clone. As I said, my barrel is cleaned everytime and it shots extremely accurately as this picture shows. Some people prefer to leave a .22 barrel dirty, but not me. And my accuracy is actualy better with a clean barrel, and yes Ive tried leaving it dirty after 500+ rounds, cleaned it, repeated, and got better groups. But this may just be me. As each rifle is indeed different. Find what works for your and your rifle the best. As many other people have said the same thing, as the poster above me said. But I find in "my" case its better when clean.

I fire around 500+ rounds when ever I go to shoot. Every weapon gets cleaned every time regardless of how many rounds I fire, however.

Clean weapon is a happy weapon.

I also subscribe to the clean them after every trip to the range no matter how rounds I shoot, rimfire and centerfire both. I just can't bring myself to put a dirty gun in the safe!

I've been doing that too. Just only shooting about 200-250 rounds per outing. Was wondering if I really needed to clean it that often. I kinda wished it was dirtier since I go to all that trouble to break everything down. Maybe I'll try 500 rounds next time and see how it does. I only occasionally get a fail to fire and pull out the shell and see a blob of dirt that's been struck by the firing pin. Clean it off and put it back in and it's good to go. Thanks for all the input.

Damn, I hope no one says that cleaning constantly is "bad" for your weapon. Only if his name is "Dremel Dude".....BTW, I clean after each range trip; I believe it's therapeutic for me and the weapon...

Yes you absolutely "can" harm a barrel if your not carefull. But not being carefull and not cleaning it at all are two different things. As I siad,I have heard many people say not to clean a .22, but on the other hand, I have sen just as many shooters at the ranges, forums etc. saying just the opposite. I have been around firearms for the past 26+ years, and am always carefull when handling the weapon and do a proper cleaning of it. I am not saying "whos right" about the clean vs dirty issue.( every shooter has what works best for him or her) All I can say for a fact is "my personal" 15 22 shoots with better accuracy when having a clean barrel.

The last time I called S&W( to get my rifles MFG date) I asked them about this very issue. Turns out that S&W themselves told me I should clean the entire weapon after each outting, barrel included. I asked the S&W rep about this issue, of clean/dirty and possible damge if someone DOESNT take the proper precautions, and was told this basicly "It has a lifetime warranty, thats pretty much says it all huh?" I answered , the obvious" yep, pretty much" lol. Again not saying im right or your wrong, just my personal experiences with my 1522 is all. Happy new years guys!

Happy new year to you as well. My only other 22LR experience is with my 22 pistol that's over 20 years old. I've cleaned it everytime out. I know I've put near 10,000 rounds through it (I used to keep a log for years and that showed over 5,000). I've never had issues with cleaning it everytime. I did have issues with dirty ammo and shooting more than 250 rounds without cleaning.

Thanks for all the input, I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

I clean anytime I have put more than 100-200 rds. through it. I look at it like routine maintenance. When you regularly check/clean, you can often find minor things before they become problems.

Like checking tire pressure, wiper fluid, etc on your car. Usually there's nothing wrong, but you do it to make sure.

Common sense and moderation should be your guide. There is no need to clean a weapon after every use, BUT there is a need to clean it.

I clean my weapons every time they are fired. If I don't intend on putting 250 -300 rounds down range, I don't bother going out. I have never heard of a firearm that wouldn't shoot because it was clean.

I generally put ~300 rounds through mine every range trip, and it gets properly cleaned each time, including the barrel.

Every body says you do more harm to the barrrel cleaning it but think a minute if you can how fast a bullet runs through the bore at 1200fps  like the cci mini mag
(Just a thought)

I always clean all my firearms after each trip to the range or elsewhere shooting. Typically in a range trip, I'll shoot from 100 to 150 rounds with the 15-22. I just like the feeling of a clean gun when I put it away.....for a short time! ;)
