As I just bought my rifle I haven't even been to the range yet, and given winter is here, I may not go until spring.

I was thinking about how many rounds I may go through next summer and couldn't even begin to calculate how many I'd need to buy.

How many rounds does the average shooter go through in a day on the rifle range? Would under a 100 be a safe estimate or is that far too low?

Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. Sighting in for whatever purpose may be as little as one shot, a match 50-100 rounds, a practice session about the same, and load or chronograph work may be anywhere from five to 100 rounds. I never simply plink, so I can't answer that.

Just remember that ammunition is not getting any cheaper and as of this time tomorrow it may be getting expensive fast. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

I normally use about 168- 224 ( 28 in a mag x 6-8 mags ) per trip in my 15 and about 400-500 in my 15-22 :D except this next trip which will be testing hand loads .

Like GMC Man...... 180-270 per trip in .223 and over 500 in 15-22

I mainly just Play and have fun..... And sometimes testing new loads and Bullets.... I dont go to a range per say... im in open desert in a desginated Shooting area... so can pretty much shoot 25yds to 600yds if I want

Hard ta say.... but I have never shot less than 160rds in a range/desert shooting day...

Today, 80 through the OR and 30 through the Mini, plus 6 .357 through my friends handgun, in a 1 hour session.

Good info so thanks for the replies. While everyone shoots differently, it looks like I can at least plan on 100 round minimum per outing with my AR.

This will help me to stock up on a resonable amount of ammo over the winter so I'll have a supply come next summer.

While I'd love nothing more than to have boxes and boxes of ammo it's just not feasible. I have too many hobbies to support, lol.

Went today. About 35 through the Beretta 92, about 45 through my S&W 5906, 15 through the M&P 40 FS and 30 through my Sig M400 AR15. Kind of cold out so round count was about 1\2 what I usually do. Still a fun day.

100 through the AR, 30 through the 7mm Mag, and 60 - 80 through the handguns.

It's all about choices. I was going to buy a bumper for my Jeep. Needed a stubbie. My Jeep is another hobby that I spend a lot of money on. Instead, I took a sawzaw to the ends of the bumper and had my stubby for free. Took $180 to the fun shop and picked up 500 rounds of XM193.

At the range, I'll go through around 160 rounds of 5.56, 100 9mm, 50 .380 and like the others, around 400 .22 out of my 15-22. Me and my kid try to see who can dump 5 mags (25 rounds each) the fastest. :D

Me too. I wish I could find a cheap hobby.

In my immediate area, outdoor rifle ranges are non existent. There is one 100yd rifle tube within reasonable distance. $16/hr, slow fire, shot off a bench. I'll go though maybe 40 rounds of .223 over the hour.

If I had the opportunity to shoot the 15-Sport like the 15-22, that would be a whole different story. I'll burn 3/4 of a brick of .22lr during a range session. Now that's fun stuff.

I come from a Military family and one value that has always stuck with me is leave no ammo behind.
I shoot what I carry to the range, normally I bring 4 or 5 guns with two boxes of ammo each,3 handguns and two rifles.
works out to be about between 405 to 335 rounds, I always bring 15 rounds back in a clip for safe transport

about 100 on average in 223 for practice and fun. If I am working up a load I may only shoot 20 to 50.

If I am target shooting I will run around 100. If I am hunting with it anywhere from 15 to 50. that all depends on the Pdogs or Coyotes.
