I have always been interested in the S&W Mountain
Gun since buying a 44Magnum and 45Colt, over
the years.

It intrigues me that there is a 41 Magnum MG.
My question is, how many 41Mag were made in the
Mountain Gun? S&W Enthuists could you tell me?

Thank you in advance for your Replies.

No, I can't. Hopefully someone will be along that will.
SCSW 3rd Ed. doesn't have much regarding the 657 and even less for the MG. They are -4's and appears to have been made approximately 1 year, 1997-1998 time frame. I can only vouch for the one I have. :)

41 Magnum

Thank you for Replying.

Was looking at Cabela's, low and behold they have a
S&W 657-4 41Mag Mountain Gun. Of course the sale
is "Pending". Price is $899.99.

The Pictures don't show much, but it appears to be
nice. I could have had it shipped here and inspected
it.

Hope some S&W Enthusiast will come along and tell
us how many were made.

My MG 44Mag below.

I don't know the total number made either but as I recall, there were not a tremendous number made.
Mine is also a 657-4 with a product code of 103949. I bought mine in October of 2000. The serial number puts in the 1998-1999 range.
I believe they were supposed to be sold to Stocking Dealers only but did not sell very well and were ultimately sold to any dealer.

Unopened

Scrounging around in my Reloading Stuff I found
an Unopened RCBS Die Set 41 Magnum.

Now to get that 41Mag Mountain Gun.

41 Magnum Mountain Guns were produced across about 6 years

Smith and Wesson does not keep the kinds of records that collectors would really like.

Total production will probably never be known for sure but it was at least in the several thousands.

Based on 41 Magnum enthusiasm at the time of the production, I would doubt that it reached 10,000+ revolvers

The 41 Magnum Mountain Gun was offered in both Blue and Stainless steel

There were two runs of the Model 657 Mountain Gun and a single run of the Model 57 Mountain Gun

S&W 657 41Mag

colt_saa - Thank you for the great information, knowing
that I will be patient in finding the right one. Now I'm
going to be looking for the Blued too!!

Some S&W Models just go for crazy prices.

Take for instance, the Sunday evening S&W 657-4 41Mag
Mountain Gun, went for $1444.50 plus all tax. cc 3%, S&H.

I have made it a Rule not to buy unless I can inspect
before I Buy/Bid. I was able to handle that MG.

The Revolver had some issues; when I first opened the
Cylinder (for Safety), it would not spin. There was Rust
in the Bead Blasted Top Strap. Grips worn. Shooter Grade.

I Bid to what it was worth to me, and a little more based
on my other two Mountain Guns. I wanted it to Collect and
Shoot.

Then I seen one on Cabela's for $899.99 sale Pending, go figure.

I'm patient, I will eventually get a 41Mag.

Thank you colt_saa for your input!

I've never seen any production numbers for the Mountain Guns. It along with the regular 4" barrel 657 seem to be the least seen of any 657s that were produced in quantities of 2000 or more, e.g. 3" round butt 657 5490 units, 6 1/2" 657-2 Classic Hunter 2000 units.

According to the Spec. Ord. number on the box label for my 657 it is from 1998.

The 57 Mountain Gun was introduced in 2005. My 57 Mountain Gun is from 2009.
