How much ammo do you guys keep around?

I suddenly have a deep and urgent need to go buy some more... I seem to be building up a collection of Cabela's free dry boxes... i'll have to find more uses for them!

I would be very careful broadcasting information of this nature. Some towns and states have storage quanity limits and you could be opening yourself up for a problem. I am not one of those that believe that the "jack booted" whatevers are lurking around every corner, but this is an open forum and you never know who is reading this information. FWIW :D

To that point, I recently read a story about some hoard of ammo they confiscated in MA. He had at least 2000 rounds!!!

I am pretty sure that no jury would convict me around here. Laugh at me for not having enough ammo maybe, but no conviction.

Supplies and inventory

I'll be 63 in December. I believe that the current inventory of ammo: 22 LR, 9 mm, 30 Herrett, 38 spl, 357 mag, 40 S&W, 44 mag, 45 acp, 223 Rem, 25-06, 308, 30-06, 7 mm Rem mag, and 45-70 is sufficient to last until I hit 70. At that time I will have a living estate sale to liquidate all the center fire weapons that I don't want or can't shoot. My wife and I will then take the vacation of the month until the money is gone. By 72 I plan on being penniless, almost defenseless, and have the memories of a lifetime.

In the event of ammo shortages, there are enough components to allow me to shoot enthusiastically until I can't run a Dillion 550. There is 18 gallons of 45 acp, 5 gallons of 40 S&W, 3 gallons of 9 mm, 1 gallon of 30 Herrett, and 3 gallons of 30-06 to reload if I have bad weather and can't get to the range. :D

What shortage?

I don't consider myself a "hoarder, but I like to have enough ammo around to shoot as much as I like, even if my local dealers are out for a few months (or so). If I see a good deal, I'll buy it and stick it in my stash. I don't clear the shelves; I'll just buy a box or two or four.

This is made easier by the fact that I limit myself to a very few calibers. The overwhelming majority of my firearms are chambered for .22LR or .38 Special.

A lot. My wife just rolls her eyes and sighs every time I add another Cabela's dry box to my basement ammo storage area.

I have enough .22 ammo to shoot one round every hour for three years. I have so much .223 that I recently purchased a significant number of stripper clips to load up, and ran out of clips before running out of ammo. I have enough .45 ACP to save Private Ryan - and all of his brothers, and their friends.

Ammo

You can never have too much ammo! As one poster stated, it only goes one way......up. It doesn't go bad, doesn't take up too much room and for some, it's always in demand. Not gloom and doom but many think it may some day be used as currency. Those raised during the depression down south always kept a supply on hand "just in case". Right now I think I have about 3000 rounds in various calibers and I try to keep about that number on hand. But that's just me.

I first look at storing it like insurance. I spend a small fortune every year on house, car & umbrella insurance that I never use. At least with this, I have something to show for it. Second, I like to look at it like poor man's gold. For the cost of a few ounces of gold I can have a LOT of ammunition.

If/when the shtf, ammo will be much easier to barter for food and supplies. How can I buy breakfast, groceries or suppies with a 1oz gold coin? What would you get back as 'change'?

A year and a half ago during the shortage... zero.

Now, across all calibers about 10,000 to 12,000 rounds.

I buy when I find something I use at a decent price. This includes ammo components. I try to replace what I shoot up and when I find a deal I buy a little extra. I am sure that someday, when I am working on a long dirt nap, someone will go to my storage area, put their hands on their hips and say: "What in the H*ll was he thinking!"

After the election in '08, I was caught with less than 1000 total rounds loaded ammo, and components for only about 1000 more.

That will never happen again!

I got permission, almost an instruction, from my wife, to stock up. I have, and if I stopped buying right now, I'd still never have to buy ammo or components for the rest of my life. But I'm not letting the fact that store shelves are filled back up, powder is back down to $20, and .22 ammo is back down to $15 a brick lull me into a false sense of security. I'm not in the same buying frenzy I was when I thought ammo was gone for good, but I'm not stopping my stocking up.

In my state you can only have 10k rounds of rimfire and 10k of centerfire 5 k shotgun and 16 pounds of smokeless powder without a special permit.
The first thing I did was to apply for a special permit which allows 30,000 rimfire and 50,000 of centerfire and 50k of shotgun and 48 pounds of smokeless powder, of course I disagree with the 10,000 primers (it is easy to get there)

I am not there yet! maybe 10k rimfire, and 20k various centerfire, I bought about 3k 30.06 before the prices went up! I only have a couple hundred rounds of 12 gauge.
I keep it all locked up in several stack-on gun cabinets.

surrounded by a plethora of "NO SMOKING" signs ? :D

Actually next to my furnace room (at least 6 feet from the furnace), my reloading bench is in the furnace room, it is an oil fired furnace.

Friends figure I will be in orbit some day :)

about 10 k rimfire
2,000 .223
2,000 7.62x39
1,000 .40
500 .45
500 .9mm
250 12 ga, slug and 00 buck
and then about 50 of each of some cal.

I counted once, a few years ago, but it's a moving target. I reload, I shoot, I give some to my buddy, I find myself low on something, so I reload, I pick up some cheap components, I shoot....I guess I try to keep my ammo cabinet full. After reading "Patriots," I admit I've been more liberal with purchasing .22 ammo when I find it reasonably priced...

I'm in trouble. Was at a swap meet on Sunday at the gun club and bought 10 racks of primers in one shot. At $10/1000 I couldn't resist. I missed out on 4000 more when I went to the car for extra cash.:D

I stock about 4 pounds of gun powder
2,000+ primers
10-15 lbs. of assorted brass (.45, 9mm, .357, .44 and .40SW for some odd reason, and .223 re-sized for 7mm)
10lbs. of .38 lead
10lbs. of .45 hardcast
not much 7mm BT
Think I'm out of 9mm RND

But .22LR I only just buy about 500 at a time for now. I'm sort of getting back into my 7mmTC/U after a 15 year storage! I just shot this sucker last weekend and forgot how much of a kick it has and chrono'd at 1600+fps! Now I'm all hot and bothered on getting it scoped for 100 and 200 yards!

7.5K-10K 22LR
2.5K 5.56
1.5K 9mm
500 .357
100 12Ga
100 20Ga

Quantities subject to change weekly.
