How much ammo for an AR?

My ammo stocks are in good shape, but now is the time to dust off the golf clubs. The longer we continue to buy ammo at these prices, the harder it will be for them to go back down to something alot more reasonable.

Too lazy to go check the bunker and count. :D

Myself,I'm dusting off the fishing poles. :D Also time to drop the blower off the Deere and put the deck back on.

I've got 500 or so rounds. I'm looking to get up to 1200-1500. I'm just a plinker though.

I am low on tracers a few mag dumps will hurt my supply, but with all the snow now is a good time. 223 is at the highest prices I have seen in my 50+ years, locally 1K is going for 675$. I think you should have enough for your use- self/home protection I would like 6 30rd mags at least, getting to know the gun? maybe 100-200, SHTF -Happiness is a belt fed!! Guns, mags, ammo may be starting to turn the corner, lets hope it continues. You should try to get through this time but do not forget it, next "TIME", power grid, snow storm, natural disaster go down you can work on other items that might be needed. I started in 1995 and I look at 22 lr ammo as money. Where I live trading for goods with ammo would not be unusual if it came to that, but most of the time I find that I would rather help a neighbor/friend then get anything from it. Reality is that it usually gets "paid" back when ever I need something and that the way I prefer it. Be Smart, Be Safe,

In my opinion CDDANJR has it right on the mark. I shoot as a winter sport and play golf during the warmer weather. There's more to life than hoarding ammo. As a wiser man than me once said "Illegitimi Non Carborundum"

To defend hearth and home the single loaded 30 round mag you have in the rifle should do it.

10,000 for shtf? That's silly. You are not going to live through multiple fire fights.

I think it's better to plan on surviving than to plan on dying.

I figure if the SHTF or if the zombie apocalypse happens because of some new black plague, or a foreign country invades, or maybe the economy goes belly up and it's every man for himself...... At that time you won't be able to buy ammo online or at a LGS for any amount of money. At that time the only ammo you get will be what you have and what you can find. You may have to defend your home and family multiple times against multiple attackers.

You can't buy bread a week after the hurricane hits. All you get is what you have.

It all depends on what you do with your weapons.

The average deer hunter will probably have a 20 round box last him for several seasons. The guy that goes out to the range every month or so might make a single case last a year.

As an instructor, I know that I can burn through over 100 rounds a day just demonstrating drills and techniques. When it comes to me attending a course as a student I might be going through close to 2000 rounds in a weekend.

I generally have three "stacks" of ammo. One group is ammo that I put away for courses I have scheduled that year. This ammo is sorted into individual ammo cans and labeled with each course name. This can range from a few hundred rounds of handgun ammo for a one day class through two cases of 5.56 for a full on weekend working carbines.

The second stash is plinking or practice ammo. This is what I grab from when I want to go out and shoot on my own, shoot a USPSA/IDPA match or take some friends out to mess around on the farm.

The third stash is my "rainy day" ammo. I don't have day dreams of roaming the woods in some zombie/Red Dawn/fall of the government/whatever scenario. This is just a small stash of ammo that I keep for those "just in case" situations, such as the one we find ourselves in now.

None of this includes my duty/defense ammo. I keep a decent supply of that to ensure that I can test any new weapons to make sure they work with this ammo and of course keep all of my operational magazines loaded up.

Only as much as you can carry when you have to bug out.

Did that years ago. I beat the rush and bugged way out in the boondocks. Have a garden,we can own food including meat. Fresh wild game and fish are out my front or back door. Fresh water and stored fresh water. Wood burner back-up and 7 cords of wood in dry storage and replaced every year as used. Battery back up and solor re-chargable. Have a HAMM radio for keeping informed from around the planet. Just an everyday way of life. Growing up out in the country you learn to survive everyday life and what ever it throws at you. In the winter when I was younger,it would be nothing to NOT see a snowplow for a week or two. More than likely,we'd plow it enough just to get through ourselvels and the neighbors. No running to the store twenty times a day back then. Our neighbors, family and friends are our own protection. Everyone has "multipul specialties" from all over the spectrum to survive and stand off any sheep stampede that wouldn't even get this far out in the boondocks to begin with.

SHTF,city folk are going to be in for a GIGANTIC surprise of a life time. Just where you bugging out to and what are you going to do once you get there to survive ??? Chances are the elements will get you first.
