I think we all do it - maybe not real competitors - the ones I know make little excess over their consumption. I am speaking of the madness of reloading. All of my brass - every caliber I shoot and reload for - is loaded. But... I have extra boxes of primers! I must get more bullets! Oops, I now need more brass... and boxes... time to dumpster-dive at the range... again... hope the line isn't long!

Add the above to the paranoia over the last six plus months concerning the continued availability of ammo and reloading supplies, and we probably all have more ammo than we'll use in two - or more - lifetimes. Where does it end? I want to know... for real... I, too, am part of the problem. My present consumption, should I stop reloading, may last me to age 123!

Gotta go - maybe WallyWorld got more .22LRs in...

Enough ammo....is there such a thing?

You can never have too much.

I suffer the same problem as you.....I MUST load all the components on hand...then what ever is left I MUST buy the others to "finish the job". And the cycle repeats endlessly!

And I also am off to Wally World for .22's, again, today. I do have a number in mind for what is enough in .22 though...and it's 6 figures and the first digit ain't a "one" either!

People who hoard usually had a time in their past when something was needed and not available to them. Someone who at some time has been truly hungry may store food well above what they actually "need". Those of us who handload and went through the "great primmer shortage" years ago may get uncomfortable if we see conditions that look like a possible reoccurance. If you have ever had a favorite firearm for which the ammo companies have stopped loading ammunition, forcing you to retire it before you were ready, you know the feeling of "If I had only stocked up when it was available".

Those who lived through the Great Depression or even those who remember the stories of elders who did, seldom throw away anything they think they might someday use. My parents, especially my mom, were that way.

Given current conditions, I'd say a minimum of a five year supply would be prudent. As for a maximum, when I run out of space to store it?

It is easy to fall into the component mismatch cycle. I noticed I had some extra 168gr HPBT bullets so off went an order to Graf & Sons for some 7.5 Swiss cases. I hardly shoot the K-31 but at least I can now. My rough rule of thumb is 250 rounds for oddball stuff like 7.5 Swiss, 7.7 Jap, 444 Marlin. 1000 rounds for 308, 30-06, etc. 1000 rounds for pistols that I seldom shoot like 380 and 7.62x25, and 2000 rounds of 38, 45, 9mm etc. I am low on some and way high on others but at least I have some benchmarks. Of course another problem is having ammo in calibers for which I don't own a gun. A good excuse to search gun stores.

with our last president, a box or two was plenty. with this new administration there is no "too much".

For me, it would be about July.
Just gotta do those matches!!

Gunpowder is addictive.

Well, where I live, there is no such thing as enough. There is no ammo at Wal Mart, Dicks, Bass Pro or the gun shops. No sense wasting gas to even go look for 22lr.

I have so many backorders for reload supplies if they ever clear my credit card will melt but then it would be time to order more.

I need to count my bullets now.

Too much is almost enough! Now my question is.." Do you shoot so that you can reload or do you reload so that you can shoot?"

When the movers kept bitching about all those heavy green metal boxes, and made "several" trips with the 2 wheelers. Now I have more room and can load even more.

To quote a longtime member of arfcom,

"You can't have too much ammo unless you're swimming or on fire."

Words to live by.

Well, I understand Stain's question, what is enough is a personal question.

I default to the old hot rodders phrase that could apply to ammo, "too much power is just about right." So, perhaps, "too much ammo is just about right?" Don
