How often do you load/unload your carry gun(s)

I unload my carry gun when I'm cleaning/lubing it or when I go to the range. Other than that it stays loaded. My magazines stay loaded for literally years at a time.

How often do you load or unload your carry guns?

Other than at the range, I keep my SA M1911A1 a Cond III.

Hard to believe people walking around with a gun for self protection and not shooting it for weeks at a time. WOW!!!

1. How often do LEO's shoot their gun, but they carry a gun around all the time.

2. Why is it difficult to believe that people carry a gun for self protection and not shoot it on a regular schedule? Maybe they don't have the time, money, or resources to shoot as often as you do.

3. I shoot once a couple of months, most times it is not my EDC (x2). I am confident in my abilities to hit a target without having to practice once a week.

AS NEEDED.

If I've been working around the yard & got into more dust/leaves etc than usual, it gets a brush out & re-lube IF NEEDED. By lubed I'm talking 3 drops of oil on a q-tip for the entire gun, then wipe off excess if any. I too get a kick out of "never been fired/mag spring worn out. :D Just like the MB 590 I bought. Someone loaded it fully & let it stand in a closet for 25 years or so, kinda like what I'm doing now.

I do try to go to the range once a week and shoot my 1911s and 4566 a bunch. My carry is a revolver which I might shoot 5 rounds of wad cutters through it just to remember how it shoots. Truck gun has been loaded for over a year and not been bothered a bit, same for my nightstand guns, loaded and left alone. If I shoot them I clean them and oil them, if not I leave them alone.

1. It doesn't matter how often LE shoot their guns. They come from the same pool of gun owners. There are ones who do it only when they have to and then there are ones who are at the range every day. Why are we using LE as a standard for practice? Why then not the Seals or Delta!?!? Or even someone like Miculek?

2. Because if you can afford a several hundred dollar gun you can afford a case of ammo. Right now you can get any one of the major calibers (9/40/45/38) for $180 - $260 for a case. I left out 357 because people typically practice with 38s. If you shoot at minimum one box a week that's 20 weeks. A 100 (two boxes) rounds/week will last 10 weeks.....that's 2.5 months. Avg gun owner has more guns than ammo. To get good all you need is ONE gun and lots of ammo. Instead, typically people buy lots of different guns in different calibers and then can't afford to practice consistently. Obviously this doesn't hold true for every single person. If that person has only one gun and still can't afford to practice then they have bigger problems to worry about.

3. Being confident in ones ability on a static range with a hanging paper target on an occasional outing doesn't translate to real life. This is why practice is essential

You sound very much like me. My Glock 17 stays loaded with 17 rounds 24/7. I have three mags that stay loaded.

The reason I ask is because I often read on this(and other) forum posts by people who state that they come home at night, unload their EDC and put it in the safe every night then reverse the process every morning. This seems like a royal PiTA to me (as well as unsafe) so I thought I'd ask.

EDC stays loaded and bunks up with the nightstand gun in the lower bunk. :D

If I'm carrying a semi auto all the time, I'll unload it at home and put it in the safe. About once a week or so, I'll unload the mags I carry with it and rotate the rounds. If it's a revolver, I leave it loaded. My nightstand gun is always a different gun, and it stays loaded. When I rotate the nightstand gun, I'll unload it and put it in the safe . . .

Good routine, sir.

I have two J frame revolvers that I use for carry and home protection. A M442, and a 3 inch M60. Usually the "big" gun for around the house and the 442 for carry. I have been transferring the same 5 rounds of 135 gr GDSB plus pee between the two guns, leaving the gun in my safe empty. I admit that I am not sure that it is a good idea to leave a loaded gun in the safe. Not sure why, it is a safe!
My only other gun, a Ruger 44 SPL flattop, stays in the safe empty, or with snap caps in it. I do keep a box of 44 SPL SD ammo around for back up use.
I fire a couple 20 round boxes of the SB 38 SPL ammo a year for familiarization and rotation. Sometimes I unload my carry gun for snap cap dry fire practice. I fire about 2 thousand rounds of my reloads a year for practice, about equally split between the two J frames.

Best,
Rick
