How often to clean your Firearm

Every hand gun that I own is my carry gun. So I clean them every time I shoot them or ever other week.

After each trip to the range, or any use.
If they go unfired, a wipe down and inspection every 90 days.
I even keep a record.

+1.

Doesn't matter if one round or one hundred have been put through... I clean it. I actually have a routine where every Sunday night I break out one of my guns that I haven't used in a while and clean it.

Yesterday after cutting the grass, I cleaned my 686 because there was some grass / dirt on it.

You mow your lawn with a 686? Must get expensive and upset the neighbors.:D

Depends on the particular firearm...

Anything muzzleloading is cleaned the same day as firing.

My S&W Model 41 gets cleaned when my score starts to go down or it seems to be cycling slower.

My S&W Model 52 gets cleaned just about weekly.

The K-38 gets cleaned probably monthly.

For me, it all depends on the gun and the ammo that I'm using,
Smith 686 after every range outing (50-100rds)(lead ammo)
Ruger 22/45 after every 500rds
Ruger P89 and P90 every 2nd outing (2-300rds)(plated or jacketed)
Berreta A390 shotgun 4-500rds

I also have two target rifle with stainless barrels. One of them I shoot naked bullets (just copper jackets). I clean this rifle after every day of shooting. My second target rifle I shoot moly coated bullets and I only clean this rifle at the end of the season. I pump as much as 800rds through it in one season with absolutely no loss in accuracy.

Thanks for your Great advice and comments, like I said I will clean my Firearms as my tools, after every use so that they are ready to use the next time.
Smith&Wesson all the way.

Self defense firearm: every single time I shoot it, one round or 100. Wipe them off with a silicone rag and make sure the dust bunnies are gone even when they haven't been shot.

Rifles: when needed, or when changing from cast to jacketed or vice versa.

Shotgun: never, unless they get wet. My two Perazzi trap guns and my wife's new (to her) Perazzi TM-1 do not need cleaning as long as they are wiped with a silicone rag and the old grease removed from the places which can gall and new grease applied when assembled. Once in a blue moon I may clean them just to see what the bores look like. BUT, I use Downrange wads which leave very little plastic residue compared with factory and other component manufacturers.

My 1100: every 350 rounds (+/-), I pull the forend, remove the barrel and wipe the mag tube. After the next 350, I remove the bolt and trigger group and clean it thouroughly.

Wife's 3901RL: every 800 to 1000 rounds, I clean it thoroughly, including the trigger group.

Exception to the above; anytime they get wet.

After fireing. If not fired? Semi-auto, monthly (if carried) Revolver, Yearly. (if not fired)

Same here man

Simple formula I use.

1. After use.
2. After exposure to inclimate weather.
3. After 60-90 days of non use.

Amen. Dirty gun has a better chance to malfunction. Do you want the shot that counts to not go bang? You never know when your gun will be needed, if you have variables that you can control why not do so?

I clean mine after every shooting session, and usually when I want the TV remote and my wife's hogging it. She can't stand the smell of solvent and it clears her out of the room pretty quick :D

I was taught you wash up before you go to bed, why would you put a gun to bed dirty, just my .02

Light cleaning after every use. Deep cleaning during football season, except when Dallas is on the field - I don't like to throw my guns.

After each shooting use. If I just "handle" them I only wipe off with a silicone rag and put back in the racks. I see no reason to clean a gun that has been sitting unused for 60-90 days. I have some guns I have never shot so I only cleaned when I brought home the first time, and some haven't been cleaned since. They sit in a walk in vault with the humidity and temp controlled.

Well its not the dirt from shooting it that can do you in vs the dryness of the gun.
