Per the S&W 3rd generation armorer's class in 2007, 5 years or 5000 rounds. No mention of differences between models.

If you need recoil springs go to this site, they are really cheap. When you get to the main page click wher it says no frame just under the logo. www.gunsprings.com

I bought a set of 3 follower springs for 17.98 and a recoil spring for 7.85 for my 4046 .40 cal.

The factory recoil springs are only about $1.45 from Smith and Wesson.
Put together an order with some spares and add some magazine springs
and new followers to spread the cost of the shipping.
It's the cheapest way to go and you know your getting the proper (Factory) replacements.

Only if you're going to be shooting alot of non-standard loads. Say if you're going to only shoot plusP loads in your gun then maybe a pound or two heavier spring might be a good idea. I have a couple of guns that I only shoot very light target loads in, I needed to go to a a spring that was a couple of pounds lighter. If you only shoot a few plusPs' now and then stick with the stock spring.

Change springs? Never thought of that...all of my 3rd Gen guns have well over 10k through them and they keep going strong! Same with my 1st and 2nd Gen guns.

Hmmmm, I called Smith on this and the guy told me over the phone that the recoil springs are good for at least 20,000 rounds but that the extractor usually only lasts a few thousand before it chips or cracks.

Wonder if he really knew his stuff????

I don't know about S&W autos, but on my Sig's and Beretta's should replace recoil spring after around 3,000 rounds.

I just bought a Smith 457 and plan on replacing as I would on my Sig's & Berettas.

Best

I replaced the mainspring on my 1006 with a Wolff 22# spring (factory is 18#) and have never had a failure of any kind, even with off the shelf ammo.

In my opinion, the stock springs are a bit light, as they come from S&W able to shoot even light factory loads. If you're handloading, chances are you're loads are in the hot range and a stronger spring really saves some wear & tear on your pistol.

I'm in the market for a 4006 and as soon as I find one, I'll replace the springs in it, as well.

I thought about it. Thought about buying some spares just in case the SHTF.
But I have never had one quit on me, I guess I don't shoot that much.
So I passed.
I ain't gonna replace them to just replace them.
If it ain't broke....I sure ain't fixing it.
There are semis that are 50 years old that are still on the same set of springs for light shooters.
Really, I wouldn't bother unless it malfunctions.

I replace recoil springs in 'full size' guns every 3000-4000 rounds and compacts at around 2000-2500. I have a modest spares kit, but have never needed to actually use any of said parts due to breakage, not even the extractor.

I used (heavily) a 3913 (which is still my primary carry gun) in competition through the 90s and replaced only recoil springs and a few magazine floor plates after they got too beat up to look at from being dropped on the gravel and kicked around at matches.
