The ole' lady is busting my chops over getting a S&W 581.

We've seen a few (very damn few) on Gunbroker, but she's adamant. She wants one badly!

This kind of ticks me off 'cause she already has:
1. A mint, no dash 586;

2. A 4" 1968 nickle Colt Python;

3. A 'smithed S&W Model 65 (which, by the way, is the slickest gun we own);

4. Various Ruger Service/Speed/Security Sixes which are also incredibly smooth (and expensively 'smithed).

5. A mint 6"S&W Model 19 which she simply HAD TO HAVE, and has now decided she prefers the balance of a 4" revolver;

6. An expensively 'smithed Model 10, which she like 'cause it was a police revolver.

Anyway - does anyone know how many 581s were produced? She keeps telling me we should get one because of their rarity.

Personally, I want to save up for a Model 58. She doesn't like N-frames - too heavy. But I really want one.

What do y'all think?

I think you should talk her into selling me that 6" 19 then she could afford a 4" 581!;)

I would save for the 58 since she has a mint 586 already!

Auction Arms has one on auction the current bid is $277.00 and also has the option to buy now for I believe $459.00, but hurry because the auction on this particular gun expires in 13 hours.

Sir, I don't know how many 581s were made, but I can't imagine it's very many. But no matter. Find one, buy it, and be glad she wants that rather than to redecorate the living room or something.

JMHO, FWIW.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

That woman sounds like she would be worth her weight in gold! Buy her anything she wants and be glad you don't have to remodel the kitchen or something.

Let me get this right.....the ole' lady is giving you a ration about picking up one of the coolest guns ever.....instead of jewelry or clothes or some such....and you're complaining? Go with it Dude!

I don't know how many 581's were built, but clean ones are a bear to find as many were used as service weapons and look the part. I found several clean nickel specimens before I landed a clean blued one.

I think I'm in LOVE. And I've never even met the lady. With a personality like that, any other faults could be overlooked. -Ed.

Never mind how rare the 581 is or isn't. Your old lady is even rarer!!! If you don't get her that 581 you need your head examined!!!

My 581 is probably the best shooting and most accurate S&W I own. Go for it!

Hope this helps.

Do a search on Allen's Armory,They had some 581's in the $300.00 to $320.00 range.They also have some other nice smiths.

I picked up one in Nickel a couple of weeks back. Great revolver.Buy her one, if you are lucky she might let you shoot it.

I have 2 a very nice one and one I just got from Allen's armory and it is finish challenged and has a little end shake, prefect for a project gun.

At the very least you should offer to compromise with her and find a nice N frame 357 so you can both be happy..... maybe a 3 1/2" 27 or how about a NY 520 4" - it would be close to the 581.

Just kidding of course, I have two 586's and a 686 all no dash, and the 581 is on my short list too! I have been unable to find one I've liked at the last 10 or so gunshows but am still looking. I have seen at least a couple for sale though... They are out there.

Good luck

I'm not done remodeling the bathroom yet, and my wife is already designing and picking stuff out for the Foyer and Hallway. On top of that, I have been banned from buying anymore guns this year with my savings ("our retirement"). There's also a gunshow this weekend.

Don't worry, you're turn will come.

Sir,

There are times you must follow the "Golden Marriage Rule". "Yes, Dear." Then she may help you find your model 58. Some people don't realize how good they have it. My wife has very little interest in guns but sometimes she will buy me one or I will buy one that she wants. I always tell her how much I appreciate the new gun. However, most of our extra money goes into decorating or redecorating, which has no residual value. But the majority of the extra money is spent on fleabay at a rate of 200-300 a month.
So, buy her the 581 and she may even let you play with it. And if you are real excited about her 581, she might get excited about you getting a model 58.
Bottom line, relax and enjoy your good, make that, Great deal!!!

I have been married to the same wonderful woman for 42 years but she does not know a Smith from a Ruger so smile and Thank God for your blessing.
