I would like to use the factory sights with a red dot. I bought a one inch see-thru picatinny riser but its not enough and I don't see any taller ones. I figure 2" should do it but where can I get one? Any other cheap mount? Thanks
Folding sights are nice, but if you have fixed irons, a lower 1/3rd co-witness is the way to go. It allows you to use the top 2/3rds of the optic, and tune out the sights.
A 2" riser: NO With factory iron sights, using a TruGlo red dot a 1/2" riser makes a perfect co-witness for the sights and red dot.....now, you could get 45 deg mounts, and mount either the sights or red dot off to the side,,,,best regards Plum
The Vortex Strikefire that I bought for my 15-22 came with tall mounts but set up for absolute co-witness where the red dot is lined up with the iron sights. What I wanted was lower 1/3 co-witness where the red dot is just above the sights. I called Vortex and they offered to trade the mount out for a taller one at no charge. I got the higher (1.57") mount and at first I thought it might not be tall enough being only about 1/8" taller than the Absolute co-witness mount.
I didn't need to worry, when I mounted it the red dot was just a little above the sights. I can now use the red dot or my fixed iron sights just fine.
BBqbob51, good job, the reason I like 1/3 co-witness is the BUIS take up to much of the scope's tube, thus maybe blocking your target that you intend to take out. The 30mm tube is large but add the body of some of the BUIS (MagPul MBUIS trend to be wide so they take up more scope than some), others can be thinner. But it is enough that I like the 1/3 co-witness much better than full co-witness.
