[How To] remove mag disconnect for cleaning or maintenance

I have seen a lot of people ask about the magazine disconnect on third gen models. This short pictorial shows you how to remove it for cleaning or maintenance.

Warning, if you forget to put these parts back in the gun the magazine disconnect feature will be disabled and the gun will be able to fire with the magazine removed.

I use a dab of blue on the threads. Never had one back out yet. The rear sight on my 3rd Gens are as difficult to move as any Glock I've ever moved even with the set screw backed out.

My 908 has a plastic rear sight tough. I can move it with my fingers. I had to locktite in place.

Ok, now I'm really confused. I thought the mag disconnect safety was in the frame somewhere. How does something in the slide affect something in the frame? Not tryin' to be a wise-***, just confused.

Just a quick reply I'm sure someone else will be along with a better description....You may be thinking about M&P's with the mag disconnect feature built into the sear block located in the frame. On the 3rd gen pistols that plastic plunger and spring that frank pictured pushes against a lever on the frame when the magazine is out allowing it to lock the....here's where someone else can take over....

The magazine needs to contact a lever in the frame to push up on the mag safety in the slide.

If the mag is not present the mag safety (spring pushing it down into safe possition) blocks the release of hammer and firing pin.

When the magazine is present the lever raises the plunger to allow the gun to fire.

Okay, okay, I know. I just wanted to make sure I fully understood.

Just to quibble ... the plunger in the slide pushes down on the ejector/disconnect lever, which in turn pushes the trigger bar away from the sear/hammer. The FP and hammer are not blocked.

Take off the slide and push down the ejector to see the action.

As always - my hobby horse: If your finger is on the trigger, the plunger spring is not strong enough to push the trigger bar out of engagement. The pistol will fire a round in the chamber without the magazine.

ah this explains why it mentioned this on the instal directions for the MMC sight on my fathers 39, its just below the rear sight then.

Yep, that spring will go flying if you press the sight over without blocking it.

Went well with the instructions. One thing, on my 1006 there is an inset bar under the sight that covers both springs, left and right. had to push the sight completely off the slide to get the plunger out for maintenance.

Still and all, on of the simplest and 'manager proof' bits of guidance I've seen.
