Removing the magazine disconnect on a Cali compliant Shield.

These instructions are not for beginners. Beginners should find a gun friend or smith. Don't do this if you live in Cali or another socialist state where it's not allowed. Practice firearm safety.

0. Make the gun clear and unloaded
1. Remove the slide (lower sear disconnect first)
2. Remove the roll pin retaining the trigger group
3. Remove trigger group, tilted trigger bar side down
4. Find mag disconnect on common pin with sear disconnect
5. Slide pin aside enough to remove mag disconnect + spring
6. Use small dikes to slightly spread mag disconnect spring
7. Test fit spring back, should be snug, else spread it more
8. Reassemble everything in reverse order, test trigger
9. Throw the mag disconnect away, all the way to Cali

I could only find full-size M&P mag disconnect instructions on the web, so I made these for y'all.

One picture shows the mag disconnect you will remove. The other shows it surrounded by the only tools you'll need. Wood blocks are to drive out roll pin without marring gun or work table.

Thanks for your post.

The procedure for the Shield is the same as the larger M&Ps.

Stretching any spring to fit is a bad practice. The vids typically show cutting down a ball point pen spring. If you normally take down "Glock style", you can leave the deactivation lever out as well.

Finally, there is no law at the state level preventing the removal of the safety in CA. Some counties will not allow a modified pistol on your CC permit. This includes trigger mods like installing an APEX. Check with your local IA before modifying a carry weapon.

If it's not a carry weapon, have at it if you wish.

Thanks for the info. I only stay informed my own state's laws. Texas doesn't give a hoot what one carries. And it's so big that I never leave it.

Cutting or stretching a spring is bad practice, indeed. But this spring actually no longer serves as a spring, once the mag disco is removed. It's just a lateral spacer to keep the sear disco from rattling around in there. So were it weakened by spreading, it no longer cycles or flexes at all. A small rigid tube would be a nice replacement.

I was a Glock man for many years, did IPSC with a G35, but switched to Smiths 2 years ago largely because I much prefer the Shield over the single-stack pocket Glocks. So I know that trigger pull method well. That's a great point you raised, never occurred to me while I was in there.
