If it's regular spray paint, then it will probably come off with acetone. Maybe even gun scrubber.

No idea what paint was used, but I'd try using Acetone first.

+1 If it's alot of paint, remove grips place in pan/pot/whatever of acetone, leave overnight. Presto paint gone!

Last resort go with Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK), let it soak overnight then use a 3M green pad to remove.
It's what I use to cut GunLote and Dura Coat.
Be sure to wear gloves as that stuff is nasty.

any of the above, acetone, mineral spirits, (Man made or natural),MEK, etc. yes with the grips off, soak over night, then you lightly rub with a brass (bronze) wool pad...............resoak in kerosene, blow it all off with an air house ,spray it down with about ANY spray oil, then blow that all off with the air hose...........wipe 'er down and lightly oil the few moving parts that "need" it.put the grips back on,voila.....nice again
was easier in the old days when we had the "heated, ultrasonic cleaner".......;)

If left to be saturate in oil most paints will wipe off with a rag. So I'd remove the grips and put the gun in a shallow tray and pour oil in the tray to cover it over night. The next day wipe down with a rag. You know oil is safe on the blued finish. Other solvents may not be safe.

WD-40, Have used this before and it works. Spray it on let it sit for some time, Take 0000 steel wool to the revolver and the should come right off.

thanks for all the advice. when i get it, i'll start with the WD-40 and work up to the belt sander.

road rat, i said his name was "BUBBA". i have no idea why someone would do that. i just hope it isn't a transition model or RM. lee

Steel wool or bronze wool. I used 0000 steel wool and WD40 on a Bud's cop trade in. The rust come off but so did what was left of the blue. Later read, after the fact, that I should have used 0000 bronze wool.

I would not leave a gun in acetone, MEK or any other solvent overnight. They can etch metal. I know that bearings left overnight in acetone can freeze right up.

Acetone will take most paint off in a matter of minutes.

I assume it isn't a newer model that might have a plastic bit or two inside it? Don't let a poly spring cup set in acetone at all.

Oh, that was a rhetorical question!!! I got the "BUBBA" part. :)

Absolutely no way. Acetone and mineral spirits will never do any damage whatsoever to metal or bluing. They will remove any lubricant on or in the metal, that's what solvents do. So any moving parts should be lubricated after degreasing.
