My dad was the Battery Commander of the Taos National Guard unit, which back then was an anti-aircraft unit. They did their training and summer camp at the Dona Ana Firing Range. We used to go down as a family for some of that time, stayed with friends in El Paso, spent all day in the old part of Juarez. This was late '50s early '60s. Maybe even dinner at the Florida or Manhatten! My older brother at 16 took his '49 Chevy Business coupe there for a full tuck & roll upholstery job one year!
Years later('70s) me and buddies would go down to spend a weekend there. Usually stayed in Juarez, went to bull fights, drank too much, bought stupid stuff. You know, had a ball!
I remember going across the walking bridge about 28-30 years ago with my wife and it was like walking into a war zone...we didn't stay long, and sadly I've never felt the desire to go back.

I was born there in 1949 and moved around 1960. My mom worked at Ft. Bliss for 30 years and my dad worked for the SP railroad. I remember B-36 bombers flying over our house. I think the last ones left Biggs AFB in the 50's.
It was a very nice town in the 50's as I recall. Haven't been back since 1971.
