Hows The Mexican Restuarants Where you Live?

I'm working in the Northwest right now, but Denver is still home.
#1. Mrs. Rio's Kitchen, Alamosa Colorado. Good food. Hot. Lots of it.
#2. Senor Sol (the one out near Golden; the new one was a disappointment). The green chili bowl there would raise the dead. I know, I used to be dead, and it raised me. Ai!

Don't forget the original Benny's down on 7th and Grant.

We just got a Pancho's in Hattiesburg. It quietly opened yesterday and we went after church. It was alright, but I prefer the Mexican Kitchen which has been in Hattiesburg over 30 years and is simply superb!

In Arizona? If you can't find at least one you like, you don't like Mexican food. Glendale has a few! Pedros is one of my favorites there!

So does Phoenix. Don't care for Macayos, either.

Yuma has some good ones. I travel to Socal and there are some good ones there as you might guess. New Mexico has ones that I like as well. A different style than Arizona or Socal, but very good. Love those Hatch Valley chilis!

Best ever in my experience was a hole in the wall on 11th Street, NW, in DC. That was before the 'hood was gentrified, and the clientele was a bit suspect as were the panhandlers/doormen.

In particular, the chips and salsa were spectacular. Chips were homemade and usually had a coat of oil still glistening. Salsa was a tad hot but you literally couldn't stop eating it with the chips. Top of my head usually commenced sweating after just a few bites.

Thursdays had a lunch special...taco, burrito, refried beans, and rice. $4.95 when it opened circa 1981 and only $6.95 when it closed circa 2002. Even the beers were cheap; authentic, too.

Sadly the joint went belly up when the rich folks moved back.

Be safe.

Been 15 years since I ate there, Crescent City Grill was another favorite.

But a bag of mudbugs and a 12 pack of Lone Star beer did the thing for me.

Pancho's... They used to have a few of those here in Houston.
Edible I suppose, but only a rung or two above taco bell for this
town.. There is some good stuff here in Houston. You just have to
know where to go.
For the "fast food" stuff, I usually hit the taco cabana's.. Way better
than taco bell.. Their fajitas are actually pretty good.

Back in the day, I used to go to Leo's on S. Shepherd every once in
a while. They had some pretty decent stuff at times.
If you remember the album liner for ZZ Top's "Tres Hombres" album
back in the early 70's, there was a big picture of Billy Gibbons sitting in
front of a table full of Mexican grub.. That was taken at Leo's.
The old guy that owned the place used to run with Pancho Via at
one time when he was a young pup. No joke.. But he's long gone now.
He was real old when I went there in the 70's and 80's.
Felix's used to do pretty good, but the one on Westheimer is gone now.

If you're ever in Tucson try this place, you will think you're in Mexico

El Güero Canelo

There are many other great ones there but none that I have found that have the ambience.

There rest of the year I'm southwest of Boise and there is no end of them here either.

Speaking of Tucson, if youve never had a Snororan hot dog you need to do so. (Warning, not for sissies)

In MT most towns over 10,000 population have one. We are rarely more than 100 miles from Mexican food but it isn't all good or authentic.

Judging by the Latin Kings gang grafitti in the rest rooms, there are several very authentic Mexican joints near Richmond, VA and points north. The foods pretty good, trying to get a seat where my backs to a wall and near an exit is sometimes a problem.

If you don't see Latinos or hear Spanish being spoken among the employees or patrons, that's a bad sign.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Ron H.

Hearing Spanish spoken would describe most of the Wendys and McDonalds around here.

We actually have one in Williston, ND that is outstanding. I'm a finicky Mexican eater, having worked the SW border for 5 years and being married to a Mejicana for 11 years, (still miss the home made tamales, but her, not so much.) These folks that run Don Pedros are from south of the Rio Grande and it's the real deal. They don't slop sour cream on everything, which to me is a sure sign of authenticity, you go south of the line and there ain't no stinkin sour cream on everything. Their salsa is authentico, and it's my new favorite place to eat. Hey, I live on the Great Plains, it's not like we've got real Mexican chow on every street corner. I even found some Modelo Negro over in the Wally World liquor store so that sweetens the deal.

Enjoy...

NO ONE's papers were in order!!!!!!

One of the best kept secrets in Phoenix is a little hole-in-the wall Mexican restaurant called Las Glorias Grill. It's located in a little strip mall at the SE corner of 19th Avenue and Northern. The food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, and the waitresses are mostly attractive and efficient. My wife likes the fish tacos, which are a specialty of the house. I dig the enchilada style green chili burrito with beans and rice! The interior is bigger than it appears from the outside. Salsa, bean dip and chips are complimentary when you sit down. Dollar Margaritas on Thursdays. What's not to like?

Another little known place is El Bravo, at 8338 N. 7th Street, between Northern and Dunlap. Another mom and pop shop, tucked away where it's hard to find. Probably the best tamales in town; prices are good. They charge for chips, which is unusual, but other than that, no downside. If you like tamales, this is the place to be.

If you like mainstream Mexican food, two larger outfits are Ajo Al's, located on the east side of 16th Street north of Camelback, and Carlos O'Brien's on the SW corner of 12th Street and Northern. Both offer pretty good food. We used to go to Macayo's on Central Ave. south of Indian School, but they do not currently allow concealed carry there. I served them notice we would no longer eat there, as we have since way back in the 1950s.

Jordan's Mexican Food has Phoenix roots going way back to 1946, where the original restaurant was closed last year due to the mess surrounding the light rail construction on Central Avenue. The restaurant still extant is run by Joe Jordan, brother of the the original restaurant owner. It's on 7th Street just north of Claremont on the east side of the street. It's usually less crowded, and the food is good. We've noticed fewer screaming kids, which is my pet peeve. A more adult clientele, I think.

Tastes differ, I know, but these are a few of my favorites in the Phoenix area.

I've got one Mexican restaurant to choose from, luckily it's pretty good: Carlos Restaurante

Sure do miss my favorites down in SoCal - especially Super-Mex on Warner & PCH near Huntington Harbor. It's on my must-do list when in town.

Finding good mexican food away from the border is as much of a crap shoot as going into a "cajun" resturant in the midwest. One place up in Minneapolis had something called Cajun style steak and when I asked what it was, I was told that they sprinkle it with Tony's before serving it:eek: I don't even try to find it in Louisiana but wait until the fall when we do the race to Port Aransas. When we get down there, it's nothing but mexican and south Texas Bar b que for the weekend :)

I'm, surprised Eric hasn't chimed in yet-that boy knows Mexican ;)
