Hi, I recently bought a 629 classic with 5" bbl. looking at backwoods protection rounds and have thought about Garrett,Buffalo Bore etc. I found this load at Cabelas 305 gr at 1325fps, looks good ,but unsure of manufacturer. Does anyone have experience with these? price is $44/50. Thanks

I have shot some HSM loaded ammo and it shot fine.

However if you find that that ammo has too much recoil try some Federal 300gr Cast Core ammo...

I'm a big fan of Grizzly Ammo. It's a high quality ammo that works every time and it was specifically designed for hunting. I bought it before I started reloading and I now use the same bullets used in that ammo made by their sister company, Cast Performance. (link on the same site)

Hunting Shack has a confusing web site and I can't find the load you describe on it. Maybe it's a a good, hard bullet with a wide meplat; maybe not.

I'd go with the Garrett or Federal Cast Core were it me or the lesser Buffalo Bore load.

A max load with a 285 grain bullet in my 5" -4 runs 1235 fps. It's important that the bullet be quite hard (I like brinnel 21-22) for bear protection -- at least BIG bears. These 3 manufactureers will do it right.
