Humming Bird Feeding Question

Bonus point duly awarded, however there is a half-point penalty for using Google. I think my sister nominated the winning term for a bunch of hummingbirds swarming a feeder, henceforth to be known as a "Buzz." Happy watching and hearing!

I would consider them a "squadron"!:)
Little dive bombers!

We lost a lot of them this winter during the cold snap. Even now they're only just coming back.

Last month I was on the ladder fixing the cafe lights, and noticed this guy. Apparently he flew up under the eves and froze to death. I kinda want to get him right side up and hot-glue his feet to hold him there.

We have them year round. We bring the feeder in at night when it's going to get below freezing. My wife's "bird juice" is two cups of boiling water, a half cup of sugar, and about six drops of red food coloring. The birds don't seem to care about the food coloring, and it lets her see the feeder level more easily. It gets refilled about once a week here.

4 to 1 sugar to water mix will bring them in. No red dye necessary. It's usually good for 2 or 3 days unless the temps get above around 85 degrees then it needs to be changed daily.

It's still early this season and we only have around a dozen hanging around because there is still plenty of spring flowers and honeysuckle in bloom. By mid July we will have a dozen or so per feeder, and we have 8 feeders, so we anticipate 80+ hummingbirds at our place.

4 to 1 seems to be the perfect blend and we never add any coloring. Our feeders all have varying amounts of red on the housing though. Our hummers are all very territorial and won't allow anyone else at the feeders when feeding. I'm jealous of all you folks who show hoards of hummers feeding at once. I have never seen more than one at a time, but I do get to see a lot of aerial "dog fights"!
