Hundred Dollar Mosin-Nagant

IU've got an older one (it's actually an antique Finn-marked 1891), and I like it quite a bit. The only think I don't like about Mosins, other than being hard to re-chamber for something else, unlike a Mauser), is the extractor is a little ***. Almost cheaper to buy a new gun when you have a bad extractor...grr

Soviet ammo must use a slow burning powder as the carbines have horrendous muzzle blast.

.

As it was explained to me the ammo was developed for the 24" barrel. The carbine doesn't burn it all.

I picked up a carbine last year but so far can't find any steel free (case OR projectile) ammo that my local range will let me use. Even WWB 7.62x54R has steel in the jacket. :(

The carbines have the massive muzzle flash due to the fact that the barrels aren't long enough to let the powder charge burn completely, so basically it finishes up outside!

I have a 91/30 that I bought as my first C&R purchase, 96 bucks delivered from Classic Arms, and it is a beautiful rifle. The ammo pouches stink like hell though...

Cajunbass, I just bought one of those Arizona Type 53's just to use as a template for making a sight adjusting tool for them and the M44's, and it was in pretty fair shape other than the bore being totally shot out. Has a much smoother trigger than my 91/30 does, and I'll buy another one to give Don another chance to send me one with some rifling!

I picked a model 44 carbine a few years ago for $99. Trigger ain't great. Kicks like mule. It is a hoot. Huge muzzle flash at dusk! Ammo (even the commercial stuff) is cheap. I picked up 60 rounds for $14 a couple of days ago. For the money, they are alot of fun. Just make sure you clean it well.

I've had several Mosns over the years, btu sold them all when I developed heath issues in both shoulders. The last time I shot my 91/59 I shot it 104 times and lost all feeling in my neck and arm for 2 days. Guess my body was telling me that I needed out of the high power rifles shooting.
Great guns, and if you can get the steel core ammo a great defensive round that will shoot through a car or truck.

Here is the best site for info - 7.62x54r.net (You can type it in under search as I'm unsure if I can post the link here.)

Wow! There is a world of info here. I had no idea this rifle was so popular with collectors... Thanks!

I know of a lot of collectors out there. One has several hundred of them, and 60-80,000 rounds of ammo.

Go to Gun&Game.com and go to the Mosin section. Tell them "LeftHandShooter" sent you!

I bought one when they were first imported back in the early 90's
I got my first in '82, so they have been coming in for a long time. Back then there was no surplus ammo available, the only thing we could get was the very expensive Norma, but at least it was reloadable.

SG ammo has the best price right now.

The carbines are the best, if you need to put a hole in something, and set it on fire at the same time!

Get a M44, extend the bayonet, place a hot dog on it, fire a few rounds, and it's lunch time!
Just be careful the hot dog doesn't go flying off. It's no fun to lose your weiner!

CW Spook it appears that you have a rack of my favorites, Finnish modified.

I picked up a nice 1936 dated hex, standard wood.I cleaned it and the bore was excellent, not counterbored.

I took it along on a varmit hunt and while its not a tackdriver, it does pretty good for a 100 dollar rifle.

Cleaning it up after an afternoon of shooting corrosive ammo was a breeze too.I just used hot soapy water followed by my regular hoppes no. 9 routine.

The only issue was the top handguard came loose and slid forward.I suppose I can fix that easy enough by filing the groove the keeper sets in deeper.

I don't shoot them much anymore, but still have about 40 of the various Mosins. I have probably ran 1,000's of rounds through some of them, years ago when all I fired were rifles.

If the only rifle you had was a Mosin, you could do far worse. I had one 91/30 I tried my best to wear out, and it's just as good as when I got it.
