Well, me and a few others.

The three Texans were Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard - otherwise known as ZZ Top.

Formed in Houston in 1969, these guys have been rockin' ever since. I had seen them a couple of times in the past, but always in a huge venue with massive sets and backup dancers.

This was a smaller show, probably 1500 or so. It was three guys, a drumkit, and a stack of amps playing a more blues-oriented set than I'd seen previously. Kicking off the show with "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers," the tone was set. After a few blues tunes, they performed a Jimi Hendrix cover, "Foxy Lady." The encores were "La Grange" and "Tush," finishing on a more high-energy theme.

They did bring out the furry guitars towards the end of the show, but otherwise it was just a 95-minute straight-ahead jam.

Here are some pics. Anyone else enjoy these guys?

Saw them in 1981, in the Astrodome. The field was covered with hundreds of sheets of plywood, and I was probably standing 40 or 50 feet directly in front of the stage. Packed-in like sardines, if I recall correctly. And even though the statute has long since expired, this IS a family forum, so,... nuff said.

The warm-up, warm-up band was The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Some of you may remember these guys. Led by Jimmie Vaughan (brother of the late & great Stevie Ray), they were certainly memorable, but couldn't hold a candle to what was coming next.....

ZZTop was the warm-up band, believe it or not. In a word, they were phenomenal. This was a year or two before their "Sharp Dressed Man" era, and they were very bluesy. Did I mention their set (at least 1.5 hours) was awesome?

The headliners and last to take the stage were: The Rolling Stones. Mick and the boys were much younger then. Guess I was too!

Ah, youth.... Thanks for letting me stroll down memory lane.

Edit: holy smokes, there's video! No audio, unfortunately. Somewhere in this mass of humanity, is little ol me.

Wayne you are a lucky dude !!
Seen them 3 times in Indianapolis back in the day.
70's-80's during my High School days and shortly
after graduating. They were and still are one of my
favorite bands. Wore out the 8-track "Fandango" in
my 68 Dodge. All three times i saw them they rocked
the Auditorium. All three shows were in Market Square Arena.
Did you know Billy Gibbons has his strings made special
for him out of old car bumpers ???
At least that's what i heard. Who Knows ??

There used to be a shooting range in west Houston called Southwest Rifle Range. The range is abandoned now. It got shut down when subdivisions grew up around it.

I saw Frank Beard there one day (mid 80's), he had a nickel Python. I've seen them in concert a couple of times but only at the Houston Rodeo and those "concerts" are pretty short.

Love their music and still have several of their old albums around here
somewhere. I saw them twice back in the early 80s at Market Square
in Indianapolis. One thing about their shows that I remember in
particular was that they were LOUD!
