Hunting Hogs with a .44 magnum

I have access to an M-1 Garand, but I don't think I can afford to shoot it much. Besides that the game warden would probably **** himself, if he caught me in a blind during deer season with that "fully loaded". Are the two round Enblock clips still available anywhere? I never felt comfortable taking long shots on large game anyway. I should probably stick to the Marlin, I know my limits.

I have shot a lot of deer and a few hogs with a 44 Mag rifle, and some with a 44 Mag handgun.

It kills them like the Hammer of Thor.

It is at least as effective within 125 yards as a 30/06 or a 308...

The last deer I killed was with a 30-30 at about 80 yards. I had the horrid old buckhorn factory sights. I also hadn't ever shot that rifle out past 200 feet. Needless to say it was messy, kind of turned me off to hunting for awhile. I plan to be better prepared this time

Don't actually care that much for the spelling bee discussion.
But I am envious of you guys who hunt the hogs.
I would love to take some with just about any caliber.
And I do favor the larger calibers.

Placement is key. My brother has shot 2 boars with old 44 bullets in them (all encased in gristle and scar tissue). We had a buddy over for some smoked ham and he found a 270 slug on his plate (I used a 300 mag on that one). I've had clients shoot hogs with 3 legs and one with only 2 legs==all healed up. Those were Cali hogs, however. Leaner and tougher.

The couple of hunters I know who have killed them with knives use hounds and catch dogs. Wouldn't try it without catch dogs.

I've killed several hogs with the .44 magnum, some with various S&W revolvers and a few with a Rossi 92 levergun. The 44 works great on hogs, the largest one I've taken was right at 200 pounds and was one shot one kill.

You'll want to study the anatomy of a hog as it's a little different than a deer, the vitals are farther forward. I usually take a high shoulder shot, breaks the spine and puts them down right there.

Be a true hog slaying warrior, use a boar spear and short sword. (I'll stick w/the 30-30)

I use a Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum. I have some 270 grain Speer JSP loads that work well. Hope you bring home the bacon.

I don't know about South Carolina, but here in Texas we don't hunt javalinas with a knife. Has your wife also increased your life insurance?

I've got a Javelina tag here in New Mexico...what on earth does one do with a dead Javelina? Are they tasty?

.44's are fine,...... hard cast projectiles work well but I'm sure there are others that will do as well.

I'm up for a hog hunt too. Call me and my fat butt will join you...

I would suggest wearing your orange in, set up your blind, then remove orange or wear it on your back side only?
You guys should put something together, I'd be willing to drive down from Maine for a pig hunt. Can't do it this year but I can start making plans for next fall.:)

I knew guys in California when I was growing up that hunted pigs, a couple of them used Super Blackhawk .44 mags very effectively. I've got a M94 Trapper that would be my gun of choice.

Being Captain Weenie, I do my hog hunting with a .45-70. I don't want several hundred pounds of seriously pissed off porkchops to get back up and disembowel me. Hit 'em good with a 325 grain Hornady LeverEvolution at about 2,000 fps, and he just sorta lays down, twitches some, and croaks.

We trap a shoot year round here in Texas.
Still loaded with them.
A little sidebar...if you get some little ones in your trap
one person stands "guard" with a 12 ga with buckshot.
We have had two cases when "momma" came blowin outta the
thicket.
Date and time is correct...mid-morning.
I went after big boy (pictured in the center) Friday evenin got rain out.

Ditto. I'm retired and would drive there for a pig hunt at a moments notice. Pigs ant 'yotes are my favorite targets. :-)
