Hunting with a 29/629 vs Ruger Hawks

ELMER KEITH'S .44 MAG LOAD ?

I'M NOT A RELOADER. I'M JUST AN OL' GEEZER, WHO IS A LIFETIME FAN OF ELMER KEITH. AS SUCH, I USED TO HAVE ELMER'S LOAD COMMITTED TO MEMORY. IT SEEMS THAT UNUSED BIT OF INFO HAS BEEN LOST....

DO ANY RELOADERS REMEMBER THIS LOAD, AND USE IT IN THEIR 29/629 AND DOES IT GET THE JOB DONE WITHOUT BEATING THE GUN UP ? ?

HOW DOES IT RANK IN POWER, IN COMPARISON TO TODAY'S COMMON FACTORY LOADS ? ? ?

Elmer Keiths load 22 grs of Hercules 2400 using his bullet , it originally was the Ideal mold , then became Lyman 429421 . The actual design is H&G 503 now . The Lyman mold is a real close second that I used for years before I bought the H&G mold from Northern Valley Machine in Minn .
It runs over 1400 fps from a 6.5" barrel . He actually did not shoot a lot of these as they are very very stout and hard on the older 29's . Hope this helps , Regards , Cowboy4evr

Best I can offer is to Handle a Ruger and then the Smith. See which one "feels" better in your hand. See which you prefer by way of ergonomics and stuff like the cylinder releases and getting on target. That's where your questions lay.

If you want more power then what a 44 is supposed to deliver then move on up to a Ruger in 454 cas. or get a Smith 460 which takes the 45 Colt, 454 Cas. and the 460 rounds but again, follow the first paragraph if you go this route.

629 s will handle anything you need in a 44 mag. If you like overloads got with the Ruger. It costs less to replace.
