Been looking at all the ballistics for the X frame loads, and I really want to grab a 460v in the 5" frame. Could you hunt an Elk for example with that baby? Some loads appear to have the same energy as a .308 which is what I use now. Any insight or experience? I am 90% sure you could shoot a deer or a coyote...but I mostly do Elk.

Pretty sure the 460 is rated for all game.

Just a quick glances at Wikipedia at the numbers listed on there.

150g .308 at 2600 ft/s
395g .460 at 2300 ft/s only 300ft/s slower but over 2.5 x the mass of a .308

I think a 460 will be my next purchase.

I have shot many deer with a 45 Colt with bullet pass through. Once the bullet exits all the damage you are going to do is already done. The 460 is certainly ample for elk as long as you maintain accuracy.

accuracy is what I would worry about in that short model. not that it cannot be achieved.

Yep, I would want a longer sight radius. Of course you could scope it or red dot. Really depends on how good of shot you are.

I would put an optical sight on it for hunting.

I Deer hunt with a 9-1/2 Inch Super RedHawk in 480 Ruger. I have a 30mm UltraDot on it. My back-up Revolver is a 7.5 Inch SRH in 480 Ruger also, with a 1" UltraDot. I would go with a 30mm over the 1 Inch, much more field of view through the sight.

NOTE: I suggest wearing Electronic Muffs when hunting. That puppy will give new meaning to Loud.

I carry my hunting revolver in a padded Pistol Case with D Rings added for a shoulder strap. I carry it with the strap across the chest, and the Case under my Left arm like a muzzleloader possibles bag. You can leave it unzipped on the end when stalking, or zip it shut for security in rough country. I like the case better than a holster for field carry.

Was not a problem on this 1600 lb. bison.

That's simply BS. Use firearms data sources not Wikipedia.

395gr @ 2300 fps is elephant rifle power at 4641 ft lbs of energy. Hornady lists their 200gr flex tip at 2200 fps, no where near 395 gr and it has 2149 ft lbs of energy.

Having said that, the .460 with the right slugs works for anything in N. America. Don

Uncle Sams' Army asked Colt for a cartridge that would penetrate a horse at 400 yds and kill a man on the other side. Answer was Colt Model 1873,firing 45cal 255gr conical lead bullet 900fps. Now l dont know if it will kill us ''fat lndians'' of today hiding behind our Ford F150 steeds, it is STILL adequate for any White Tail romping thru the woods

I'm concerned about my ability to see well enough with just my regular eyesight on anything past 25 yards or so so I went with this...Haven't got to use it on big game yet but have no fear of it taking whatever I shoot at.

That is EXACTLY what I want! You have got a great set-up. I think I am going to start pinching some pennies and see if I can get it for a graduation gift to myself this summer.

Glad I could help...Leupold Scope, Weigand rail, Warne rings, Nill grips. I carry it through my property knowing Bears and hogs roam....the Holster from S&W really works awesome..Get us some pictures along the way!! Good Luck!!

I really had my heart set on the nill grips for my banana hands but I use the sling when afield and can't have my swivel mounted in the handle with those grips. I am really bummed. I guess I could just get a tactical sling that just goes over shoulder one time and connects at the bottom of my bi-pod.

I can happily report the Nill Grips have been well worth the money...Not cheap as you know but really helps me feel well under control handling the beast of a gun....:D

I have a 460 with a 14" barrel and Leupold 2.5-8 scope. My concern would be your accuracy with the 5" barrel even with optics. Mine is deadly accurate to 200 yds and then starts to drop off. I will shoot 300 yds but no more. I am shooting the Hornady ammo. I say go for it but I wouldn't want to shoot over 100 yds or so with a 5" barrel, but that's me. LOVE the 460.
