After I heard that customers of Baltimore Gas & Electric went a week without power after either an ice storm or Hurricane Sandy, I got a whole house Generac generator. It kicks on about 13 seconds after the power goes out.

Think I'd pick the tornado and get it over with. Have had several close calls with tornadoes but not a direct hit.

Tornado: you get a 30 minute warning at best. And its over in 30 minutes or less.
Hurricane: days of advance warnings, long term rain & wind.

With the latest course updates, and if it holds to it, it looks like it will go right over Okeechobee. If so, this will be the first real test of the dike/floodgate systems since being built in the aftermath of the '45 hurricane that drowned most of the sugar industry on the south side of the lake. Depending on the tides and the timing, the Caloosahatchee basin could be in for some flooding.
And as a qualified veteran, I'll say this: if you're hunkering down, stay hunkered. If you're going, you should already be gone.
