Actually, I suspect your wife would be an outlier in this habit in most of the country.Bought 40gal of gas in cans today. I tend to be without power for extended periods after the storms. 40 gallons won't be enough but will hopefully hold until the stations are back in service. I do need to fill up some jugs in case a tree lands on my well. I noticed that the European model has it passing through my yard. I've already done my share of hurricanes. It's not my turn again yet. I guess I start on shutters.

Don't listen to the news hucksters, check the surface winds for yourself. Current wind at NOAA buoy Station 41043 - NE PUERTO RICO - 170 NM NNE of San Juan, PR (the closest I can find to the current location of Dorian) is 25 knots gusting to 33.
The "hurricane force winds" are probably aloft, up where the hurricane hunter aircraft fly, and have no affect on us down here at the surface.

On a serious note, stay safe and good luck. Unfortunately it's y'alls turn in the barrel so to speak-we had ours about a month ago and I'm grateful it was just a little bitty one. This time of year really gets stressful for all of us living south of I-10. PLEASE remember the great bourbon shortage after Katrina as related by Charlie Sherrel. Provision accordingly.

I did the same thing 18 years ago - installed my 18-KW automatic Generac three weeks before the (in)famous northeastern grid failure left everyone in this area (except us) without power for three days in early August, 2003. Timing is everything!

I've been here 40 years, over a dozen hurricanes. This one's like Charley 2004, a giant chainsaw. I'm not going anywhere; lots of older/ immobile folks for neighbors that are staying put. Besides, the blue "evacuation route" signs lead to Disney/Universal which is down the block. We have what we need now, nobody has what they need in a 150 mph wind / 20" rain per 24 hours. Stay safe and out of the "Fear Stampede" going on as we speak. Joe
Do not listen the the "talking heads" It is NOT a CAT 4 right now. It MAY become that,
As of right now it is 85 mph winds a Cat 1.
