I need to buy a hydrometer for my safe. Does anyone have one that reads inside the safe humidity but sits on top of the safe? The ones i see have the cord for outside temperature but its not for humidity. Also what is the optimum humidity for gun storage? If i get one that sits in the safe wouldn't the reading change soon after opening it? Thanks

I don't think I would waste my time with one. If I was concerned about humidity I would buy a Goldenrod dehumidifier and be done with it.

You may not always be around to check on the humidity. But the Goldenrod will take care of it for you unless there is a power outage.

The key is to keep the temperature constant. Frequent changes in temperature will cause condensation.

My gun safe is bolted down in the garage where it's cold in the winter and warm in the summer. But the temperature doesn't fluctuate enough to cause condensation. And I also keep my guns in Sackups gun socks which will prevent rust damage and help to protect in the event of a fire.

I don't use a dehumidifier or desiccant.

Thanks, I put a dehumidifier in there and i use gun socks but it is in a daily fluctuating temperature area and i want piece of mind that i did enough to protect my guns.

If the temp fluctuates too much you might think about relocating the safe. I know it sounds drastic but I've seen and repaired safes that sat too long in such conditions.

Humidity not only affects the contents but the safe itself. Rust and oxidation will affect the bolt works and the lock.

When

stationed in the tropics in the 50's, we used a 50 watt bulb in a cage at the bottom of our lockers to keep everything dry. :) I would not hesitate to use one in a safe if I had a humidity problem.

A hydometer is the instrument used to measure a liquid's density like in wet battery cells, wine or beer making.
You are looking for a Hygrometer, many of the inexpensive "weather stations" have a wireless sensor which can be mounted outside of a house to get temp and humidity measurements, maybe they would transmit through the safe material? I don't know.
Maybe you can borrow one to try it out. They are available in places like Walmart Lowes etc.

I have one and it sits inside the safe. It's from Midway and cost $7.99 (analog). Mine shows low/optimum/high and - according to my dehumidifyer - it's accurate.

It's just a cheap one and I will look for a digital one in the near future...
