I Cleaned Out The Cruiser Today.

Congratulations, Charlie. You've earned it. Thank you for your service. You made your neck of the woods a better place. And KEEP POSTING. :D

It took me two years to get used to retirement, I hope you do better. After I retired I found I like working pretty good. Don

PS I would like to buy a copy of your book when you get it done. I always get a big kick out of reading your stories.

As so many above has posted, Best Wishes on your retirement.

When the dust settles down, You'll find you now have more time to enjoy that cup of coffee. The morning sunrises will look even better. There is a whole different world awaiting you now.

However, remember, and I believe the others will confirm with me...

Once a Cop, always a Cop.

Welcome to the world of us Old Codgers.......

You have enriched many lives.

Charlie,

You have enriched many lives. Some you met on the job and some here on the forum.

Hoping you can enjoy the "leisure life". You will get some call form friends that start with: "Since you are retired, can you help me ... "

People are asking what I'm going to do. "Any damn thing I want to" is my reply.

When retiring, claimed that I would do nothing. Amazing how much "nothing" there was to be done.

From one old retired deadbeat to another, Well Done!!

Drift on up this way and we'll set under a tree and annoy the turkeys.

This is a picture of Leland Ray, myself and Charlie the summer before Katrina. My wife and I were on our way to the Gulf and I emailed Charlie about the chance of us meeting. He brought Leland Ray along as his backup. I think he was hesitant to meet a yankee.

Gawd, what a motley crew! Max, I promise to keep Charlie out of trouble (more or less, maybe), and I got some plans for him. We've talked about opening a business but have no idea what kind; we were thinking about a pawn shop dealing exclusively in stolen power tools, but we haven't figured out how to make a (legal) profit. Then there was the adult magazine, "Naked Perps and Cops in Drag," but we were, uh, "encouraged" not to go that route.

I've known Charlie since the beginning of my senior year of high school about 41 years ago, so I remember him when he was skinny, and I'll be damned if there are more than five or ten folks left in Forrest County who can say that. He's given me good advice on a couple of occasions, and I've taken it at times, and I've backed him up in a couple of potentially sticky situations, most notably "The Night of the Slow Draw Holster," when we were confronted by over half a dozen meth heads in a darkened trailer park. We were just looking for a poker game and took a wrong turn, fer gawdssake! And we've driven non-stop to Vegas together, which I have to admit was just about the most fun I've had in the last twenty years. (There was that little Cherokee girl, but I was married to her for a while, so that doesn't really count as "fun.")

If and when the weather warms up some, I'm going to go grab Charlie so we can go hunting a spare microwave or washing machine to perforate, and it's been a long time since we hit the buffet at the Movie Star over in Oak Grove. Not that our waistlines can stand it, but I'll risk it if he will.

Charlie, it's been real. Let's cause some trouble now.

Add my best wishes, congratulations and thanks!

Your career, take on life in general, and ability to portray them through words is almost mythical!

Have fun, and now we all know that you have more time to put your story to paper...so we've all started waiting for your book.

Thanks for being one of the good guys and congratulations on your well earned and much deserved retirement. I sincerely hope that your can relax and enjoy that which you have earned. People like you DO make a difference and we, the people, DO understand and appreciate what it take to do that job.

God bless you and the very best of luck to you.

Sir, you have a career to be proud of. Many peoples lives have been made better by their unintended meeting with you. Have a wonderful retirement and don't quit posting on this forum. Can't have that.

I have not reached retirement age yet. I am glad that you have plans to do. When the book come out I want an autographed copy. It will be great from one Charlie to another.

Good luck with the grandkids

Charlie

I wondered where all my ballpoint pens were :)

Seriously, congratulations on a fine career and your retirement.

Charlie, best of luck in retirement and thanks for your many years of service. All my best, Joe.

Good for you. Welcome to retirement. Don't be suprised if it doesn't take a year or more to adjust. You'll feeling like a fish out of water for a while.

God Bless

Thank you for an excellent story. Well written and it felt good to read it. Restores my faith in some of humanity. Good luck and have fun!

Happy Trails, Charlie. Take that long vacation you soooo deserve. I can't help but think that, until you move to another neighborhood, you'll still be the local law.

Congratulations, Charlie. I will miss your "events". I retired September 28th and I do not miss it one bit! But, I spend too much time here on the forum. Need to get out more. You earned it.

Starting the business sounds like fun. For a while after we all retired, we discussed opening a bar down by the club property. We were a jeep club and in this region there sure are a lot of them. We were going to make the decor out of old rusty jeep bodies as the booths. We were going to name it "Ron, Wes and Dicks topless bar". The topless part because we weren't going to have tops on the jeep bodies. It was a bad idea because there wouldn't be any profits. We'd see to that.

Taking your time sounds like good advice. I'm still doing that 2 1/2 years later and I like it.

When someone wanted me to do something, I'd just say "I'm just not comfortable doing that." Now folks are asking me when I can do things for them. They're getting the idea "never" will be the answer. And they're right, I didn't retire to be someones slave.

For those who want to meet Charlie, he's planning on driving up to Louisville Kentucky for the next big gun show. He's probably going to show up on Saturday the 2nd. That's March 2nd. But if you're coming, he does like bourbon. I've got a nice bottle selected to give him. We'll call that show the Charlie Sherrill retirement show.
