I feel let down by the NRA speech

Come on! How on earth can we fund cops in every school in the United States? I can't believe that I waited a week for this.

we can start by cutting aid to the country's that hate us, they can give
billions in bailouts to GM and the banks, but when it comes to the little
kids that they love so much....ZIP!

i am going to join the NRA as soon as my tax refund check comes in,literally every cent is gone every week to have a place to sleep at this moment and by the way the the polititions great ideas for school safety is to post GUN FREE ZONE signs!

Everything boils down to money. If the money doesn't come from education, what is going to be cut? The last time I heard, we were having a fiscal crisis that could result in a government shutdown.

The fiscal cliff has nothing to do with a government shutdown, which is about raising the National Debt limit which is not up for discussion until early spring. The fiscal cliff is about raising taxes, continuing the Bush tax cuts and cutting military spending known as sequester. Those are the facts. Everything is NOT about cutting education. BTW, are you currently an NRA member?

Yes, I even updated my badge icon thingee on this forum just for you. :) We are not going to start requiring that we have to be NRA members to have a discussion around here, are we?

Thank you. We should all be proud to show that emblem.

No, I'm not going to say it's require that we all be NRA members to have a discussion. But I too have a right to question why someone would criticize something they support. The NRA may not be perfect, but it's ahead of what's in second place. :D

I fear we are experiencing the beginning of the end of a true 2nd Ammendment. This time around the liberal media had been handed a cause that they could not have scripted if they'd written it themselves. Black guns, high capacity magazines, dead little kids, heroic teachers and faculty members uselessly sacrificing themselves as human shields, a decent sized body count in hometown USA,and throw in the guns were stolen from a doomsday prepper. The media will feed on this for months and this catastrophe may be the rallying point for "what's wrong with common sense gun control".

Seems we forget the fact that it's not the firearms that are the problem at all, but the literal brainwashing of our kids with guts, gore, and mayhem from thousands upon thousands of hours of video games and movies that are the key influences that cause these events. Then, pursuant to the event, we make national celebrities out of the psychopaths who commit these heinous crimes. We've had a "gun culture" in this country since it's birth, so why the change in morality which would foster the wonton slaughter of grade school kids? Seems pretty obvious to me . . . what a perverted world we live it.

We find the money for what is important. I'm a teacher, and I'm fed up with athletic programs getting whatever they want, and the academic program being told to "make do with what you have." If we can find the money to fund TSA feelers, and Capitol police to protect worthless, lying, scoundrel politicians, we can certainly find the money to train and arm one or more responsible "good guys" in our schools. As a former police officer, I've had the NRA police firearms training, I have my own weapons, now all I need is permission/authorization to carry my .357 with me to school everyday.

I am for doing anything that will protect children, if it's armed guards in schools then that's fine with me. Retired police officers, military or just a concerned citizen with proper training. We need to do something, and soon ! We all know that something like this will happen again especially if do nothing. Our experience tells us that in times of trouble we can always depend on our government to do one of two things, something stupid or nothing.

The speech failed many of the following principles about persuasion:

1. Timing is everything. Knowing how to persuade people correctly largely depends on the right time to talk to them. Approach people when they are more relaxed and you will achieve far better results.

2. Smile. Be polite, cheerful, and charismatic. A good attitude will help you more than you think. People will hear what you have to say without thinking that you want to force your point of view on them.

3. Show them all the benefits of your idea. (If possible, tell them how it will benefit them. That always gets their attention.)

4. Minimize any gain you stand to receive should the person choose your preferred course of action.

5. Prepare for any contradictions and be ready for any that you may not have thought of.

6. Don't be afraid to agree with the person a little. Say things like: "Okay, but..." or "Yeah except..." or just say yes but don't let them completely prove you wrong. However it is always okay if you hear what they have to say and try to adapt their idea to your idea.

7. Try to find out why the other person is rejecting your preferred course of action. If you can find out why, it gives you a tactical advantage.

8. If you realize that you may have been wrong in one aspect then admit it. It will make you seem more trustworthy.

9. Ask them just to consider it and think about your idea, given time to think they may realize their mistakes.

10. Be generous with your opponent; give them something they want, and they will be more inclined to give you something you want.

11. All persuasion should be suggestive not demand. But at the same time know what you want.

12. In general when trying to convince someone always talk about positive things and pleasant memories, never bad things that happened. Not about personal life experiences.

13. Try not to appear to be going to great lengths to persuade somebody. In fact, you are most persuasive when your audience does not know you are attempting to persuade them.

14. At times, it helps to let your audience know that something is really, really, really important to you, and other times it does not; use discretion.

15. Most importantly, know when to give up. Your opponent may find you talking very annoying. If your opponent perceives you as a pest, it will make you much less persuasive in the future.

It sounds like you and I saw a different speech.

Young children are still being buried and you want him cheerful.

You want him to compromise with anti gun people who will only be happy when all guns are gone and police are only carrying nightsticks.

He touched all the bases like any good lawyer talking to a jury. He was not there to entertain or compromise. That is not his job.

I found his showing of the video game where a school had people in windows, being shot by the player of the game, informative. Naturally the very aggressive and rude anti gun demonstrators tried to deny his freedom of speech and used signs to try to block the showing of the very short clips of video game violence.

We keep cycling through this situation. About 45 - 50 years ago a police expert came over from England to try to convince our police to only carry nightsticks. They claimed the citizens would see that they are the good guys and rally behind them. We had a trend of forgiving minor crimes, shorter prison sentences and not building more maximum security prisons. Everyone was supposed to be rehabilitated by group counseling. Correctional Officers were not even allowed to carry nightsticks or handcuffs. The riots of the early 1970's were the result. Prison gangs formed and the various inmate groups fought to see who was really running the prison. We are still worse off from those years of weakness.

Since then crime has skyrocked in England and in this country. Predatory criminals and even half intelligent paranoid schizophrenics see weakness as opportunity.

Most of this countries killings are in the "bad side of town" where most witnesses do not report nor testify. Most of the killings are drug gangs fighting for turf or enforcing rules and collecting drug money. You almost sound like you want to give this country completely to the drug cartels. Drive through the bad side of any major city and pick out a house with bars on the windows from excessive burglaries/robberies. Ask them if they will be first to give up their guns.

The recent killing of children is not the large problem statistically. The media cover will help it rise somewhat, for awhile, but our right to know requires media coverage. How many prison riots have you seen on television lately. More and better prisons were expensive but everyone got it done.

DING! DING!

I just think that the NRA blew a great opportunity to speak to America about reasonable gun control. As for having to register every gun that I have to purchase, so be it. As for banning black rifles, just paint them pink.

Another Mole....

The only Reasonable Compromise is NO COMPROMISE AT ALL...

Officers in schools

You pay for it by raising local property taxes to pay the officers' salaries.

In my book, that would be money well spent compared to a lot of the other stuff we pay taxes for.

I don't have any kids in school anymore but I would be willing to see a hike in my property tax rate if I knew the $ went specifically to put officers in every school.

Think about it. What's it worth to you to have professionals protecting children from these lunatics?

It would be worth a good bit to me.

Me Thinks Thou Doth Protest Too Much....

How about we start with the 1.4 BILLION dollars we send to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt to plan our demise?

Sell their 20 new F-16's to Isreal at a profit.

Come on! How on earth can we fund cops in every school in the United States?

I don't know that they have to be cops, but they do have to be "job specific" professionals. My kids' grade school already has two security people, they just aren't armed. Get them the guns and the training. Or replace them with people who are qualified.

As to the "armed teachers" solution - I'm all for conceal carry, and hold a permit myself, but I don't think you can have conceal carry teachers defending schools and children any more than you can have security guards teaching algebra. At least as a matter OF POLICY.

A conceal carry permit is for defending yourself and your family when forced to, not for directing security and law enforcement of a facility during a crisis situation. Getting the kids outside during a fire is one thing. Dealing with a shooter is quite another.

There are already 2 MILLION security guards (not all of them armed) in America defending money and property, Seems our kids are worth that.

Join the NRA.
Maybe they can hire a better speech writer with your dues.

Perfect or not, the NRA has protected YOUR gun rights better than any other single entity.
Why aren't we all members?

Mr. LaPierre did seem a bit disheveled and out of sorts. Looked like he hadn't slept in a week.

He was certainly no Charlton Heston.

Del,ole buddy,

Could we take unemployed and make something work from there? Could you embrace that idea or do I need to counter naysayers further?

Reading the NRA response transcript, there is no call to hire additional police for protection in our schools. There IS mention that there are qualified people available right now that can be deployed. I read that as qualified CCW public citizens. Teachers, parents, janitors and anybody that is legal to carry. States need to make changes in law that allow more law abiding people to obtain concealed carry permits. Just as states that freely issue CCW have shown a decline in crime, criminals will be reluctant to go to the schools or other Gun Free Zones.

I'm ex-Army. I am also a stay at home dad currently since I lost my job. I'll volunteer to do it. I'd be proud to do it for nothing.

I am convinced that this is the solution. There would need to be some pretty selective screening and oversight so we don't end up with the fox invited in to guard the henhouse, but that is a detail that could be managed. I think besides volunteer watchdogs, it would be imperative that some of the school staff also be armed so the potential bad guy would not know who to target. I can tell you that I am neither ex military nor LEO, but I am capable and trainable, and I would gladly give up my day off each week to volunteer if needed. I can think of no more noble or patriotic endeavor than protecting our children.
