I found a very nice S&W MSHP model 60

38 special. I stopped by my LGS yesterday at the same time an older gentleman, who I know, was bringing in some earlier S&W revolvers to consign. The owner, of the store, let me look through them and I bought a very nice stainless 1931-1981 Missouri State Highway Patrol model 60 snub nose. The gun has been shot, but it is in 97%+ condition and the lock up is great. We're all of these sold as part of a set? I thought I read that 900 ish were built. On the inside of the crane it has either 666x1 or 1x999, depending which way you are reading it. Mine is number 404. I tried to research them, but most threads are 7-10 years old. Any other information including value will gladly be appreciated. Thanks.

It's a standard 2" J frame with an exposed hammer, so many carry them in a medium sized pants pocket (in a holster, please).

If I recall correctly, you could also get a 4" Model 66, and you might have been able to get a set. Those came out about the time MSHP switched to Model 686's.

Just my opinion, but unless the potential purchaser has some ties to the organization, or collects state police engraved commemorative revolvers, they're worth what a regular pistol of the same style is worth, and possibly a little less.

Because I'm from Missouri and went to the MSHP Academy for my basic police, I might pay a little more for that particular pistol. But if there were such thing as an Illinois State Police Engraved Commemorative Model 60, I'd pay less . . .

I just took a couple of pictures of the last (2) S&W handgun purchases. One is the 3" Model 547 9mm and the other is the MSHP model 60 .38. The model 60 has the grips that allow you to drop it in your front pocket while the grip doesn't allow it to go all the way in. Sorry for the delay.

Some folks "collect" PD related models, commemorative ones and issued models, so your Model 60 would mean considerably more to them than a plain vanilla Model 60.

Read the assembly numbers inside the yoke with the barrel pointed left, just as you would read the serial number on the butt.

Nice picks -- I'm a fan of both your new acquisitions. I don't "buy" the "extremely rare" marketing mumbo jumbo your lgs put on the 547's tag. There were more than 6,000 3" round butt Model 547s.

As a side note, that is the 1st 3" 547 I have seen with pinned barrel. I have 2 4", one pinned, one not.
