I am sooo pumped. I FINALLY found one! A 27-2 with a 5" barrel. Until now, I had to make due with my 28s.

It is a blued 5" gun with probably 98%+ blue. It has the ususal slight cylinder drag mark. No flame cutting and the timing is perfect. Lock up and end shake are just fine. In fact, the only down side is that the stocks don't fit right and seem to be sanded. (Converted L frame stocks?) No problem as most I've seen have the dreaded "Goodyears" anyway.

I was not going to let this one get away and promply laid some cash down for my shop to hold it. Final price is $500 OTD. No box/papers. Just the gun. I suspect that the price is really good as I see 28s in similar condition from $450-$550.

I haven't seen many 27s of any length much in the past 2-3 yrs in my area. When I do, they are all 6" guns.

Here's my question, how rare/desireable is the 5".

Congratulations; the 5" 27 (Nickle) was one of my "grail guns" too. I was pleased to find mine. Now, shoot the dickens out of it. Bill

Congrats. I think you got a winner. The 5's are quite desirable.

I picked up one of the same configuration for $25.00 more than you did a couple of weeks ago.

I had wanted one since I first saw one in 1965. I was so excited, I bought another one in 31/2" the same day.

Thanks guys.

Don't have the gun yet. When I pick it up, I'll try to get pics.

I have to say, the top strap "checkering" on the 27s is REALLY cool!

I'm starting to think that once I pick the gun up, I'll be on the constant look out for number 2!

Congratulations! I'll look forward to your pictures. ...and, by the way, what a great price!

Jerry

Congrats, the 5" barrel length is probably ideal for a S&W N frame. Here is a picture of mine just to make sure we don't forget what one looks like :)

Great pics, guys! Keep em coming. To give me some inspiration until I can get a chance to pick mine up.

By the way, anyone know what are the "proper" stocks for the 5" w/ a serial # of n603xxx? The ones that come with mine are franken-stocks that are cut up, ill fitting and sanded down.

Hmmm. Maybe some customs stocks?

Looks like your gun shipped in1979. 5" and 3.5" inch barrels were discontinued that year, so you got one of the last ones.
Yours probably shipped with non-diamond magnas or targets like those on the gun pictured above.

If you want custom stocks, look no further than Kurac who posted the picture of his guns above.

The 3.5" and 5" seem to be the most sought-after at this time, as they were apparently made in smaller numbers than the 6" and 8 3/8". I can recall when there was very little interest in the 3.5", and I'm not sure why it is there now - the CCW angle seems possible, but it's a big heavy gun to carry regularly. There are a few 4" 27-2s that attract some collector interest as well.

The proper stocks may have been Magnas, or Targets...no way to be sure without a factory historical letter.

Nice find! Please post those photos...

Nice catch for the price. I'll eventually have a 5" pre-27, have to keep huntin for one. All I could find this year is two 31/2" 27's. One blue and one nickle. Have fun when you get it and let us know how it shoots. Larry

Well gee whiz SP, no wonder they're so darned hard to find!!

Great looking guns.

5" 27-2...grips

This one came with targets and a presentation case. It went down the road to fund a 44 magnum. IIRC I gave $550 for it.

Two 5 Incher's I used to own.....

A pre-27 5 inch & a 27-5 5 inch.. The pre 27 shipped on Valentines Day, 1954. I never did letter the 27-2. I really mis that pre-27
