I got tired of how I looked and felt...

Evil One, good for you. Congratulations. Keep up the good work.

I too went on the health wagon, after having to have two stents put in on June 1st of this year. I started losing weight in the hospital as they placed me on a cardiac diet, and I eliminated a bunch of things from my diet when I got home. No more salt, no coffee creamer, no more beer or Crown Royal, and lots of low fat food, vegetables, and fruit, plus drinking lots of water every day.

I went through a cardiac rehab program for 10 weeks, and went from 313 pounds to 260 pounds. After the rehab program, I joined the hospital fitness center and use the treadmill and bike, and they also put me on a program using different weight machines. I am going to try and get down to 225 or 230, but for my size (6' 4"), that may be too much weight loss. I have not felt or looked this good in years.

I am wearing clothes that I had stored away as they would not fit me, and even those are big on me now. I was even able to get into my police shirt and cruiser jacket which I was wearing when I retired in 1997. Now that really made me feel good. I was ready to call the Chief and ask to come back to work. Well, not really, but you get my point.:D

Another thing, I am not diabetic, but I do have Atrial Fibrillation, but it does not seem to bother me. I wear a heart monitor when I work out so I know what my heart rate is and I can adjust my tempo on the workout to keep it in my "safe" range. I am 66 years old, going on 67 too.

Congrats, a very big congrats.
So many make the attempt and so few get there. You are doing it.

So far this year I'm down a little over 65 pounds. Looking to lose about another 20.
This is a pic from a couple weeks ago. Not bad for having a major foot reconstruction on June 1. (yes the surgeon gave his blessings for the workout)

Picked up the Glucosamine Chondroitin, dang at the horse pills :D
Started them tonight... looking forward to less creaking from the knees.

Jim

Great! Don't expect instant results, just keep taking them per the instructions daily and you'll start to see the results in maybe a week or so, but definitely by next month you should really begin noticing. My knees went from snap crackle pop and unable to get down on the floor to basically smooth and painless (plus I can kneel down on the floor without a hitch). My wife takes them for a few days anytime she tweaks her back and they fix her right up.

Evil One, your first photo makes you look like a chubby version of my brother. Good luck to you with your health.

Bravo, sir. Thank you for your post. One of the reasons why I love this site is that in the middle of all of the posts about holsters, recent revolver purchases, internal locks, and reloading, we get posts like yours (and all of the posts in response) that remind us of the other important things in life.

I landed on my heaviest weight two months ago, when I discovered that the cargo shorts I bought last year "because they are so loose I'll always be able to fit into them" were becoming too tight. Funny how it's our clothing, and not the scales, that wake us up. Over the last few years I had crept up several waist sizes, far past the point I had always sworn I would never reach.

So, it was South Beach Diet and 4 miles of walking every day and pouring the Belgian beer into the sink (I'm a sucker for well-made Belgian beer, but the damned stuff has so many calories) and I'm more than half-way through the 20 pounds I need to lose. I'm 47 this year, but I was still able to run two miles at 8:30 per mile tonight, and hope to fit into all of those 32-inch khakis in the corner of my closet before Thanksgiving. It's amazing what the body can do when you feed it right.

Everyone is saying pretty much the same thing, and they are all correct. It's just a matter of watching the portion sizes and the carbohydrates, and keeping up with the exercising and drinking water. And it will happen.

I saw tonight what I am up against. I get up at 0530 and start my day with a glass of low sodium V8 and then off to work. By lunch time I am pretty hungry. Today I had a ham and cheese on honey wheat a bag of chips and a diet soda. I get off work at 4:30 and run some erands before I get home and by then it's 5:30. My wife is disabled so it's up to me to cook dinner. By then I am ready to eat the refrigirator. While I was cooking dinner tonight I ate a brownie and a yogart and then over ate at dinner. By the time dinner is over it's around 7:00 and then I sit at my computer or if front of the TV until bedtime. This is pretty much 6 days a week. On Sunday all I have energy to do is laundry and some housework.

How do I get out of the rut and start doing something for my health? I can probably squeeze in a 20 minute walk at work. They pretty much encourage us to get out of the office a couple of times a day. I feel guilty doing that though. Maybe some healty snacks during the daqy would help with the extream hunger.

Alde, bumping up activity is a key part. If they let you take breaks a brisk walk is great to squeeze in.
When I get breaks it is usually to wring the sweat out of my shirt :D
Keep a water bottle on hand, nuts and yogurt are a handy snack.
At home, the best way to not eat junk is to not have it around.
When at home I have been cooking healthy, and saving the leftovers.
I get hungry between meals, I reheat the stuff I fixed previously that was a good healthy meal.
I also keep a candybar in the fridge. I get a "I need something sweet" craving... I take a bite of it and put it back. I learned that from my wife.
Also, brushing your teeth is a good way to get past the sweet craving.

Everyone learns their own ways of dealing with cravings, what works for others may not work for you... but they are good starting points and MAY work.
Good luck.

You can try adding a snack of fruit/nuts/??? in mid-morning and mid-afternoon. That keeps you from being so hungry you overeat dinner.

But, here's another idea. I finally decided after 17 years of marriage to put my health a little higher on my list. I also cook dinner after I get home, but on my running nights, I cook the dinner for her and the kids, then as soon as the last item is ready, I change into my running clothes and go for a 5.3km run in the steep hills around my house, leaving her to feed the kids and herself and put the dishes in the sink. When I get back, I cool down, drink water, take a shower, change, and THEN I eat my dinner. By then, I don't over eat AND I get my workout in. I miss some TV time with the family, but like I said, I finally decided that my health was more important than the extra hour (30 min run + 30 min shower/change) of contact time with the family nightly. I'll make that up by living longer for them.

After reading most of the posts in this thread, I think the most important tip that has been given is to put yourself first. The only one who can take responsibility for you is you. My Dad died at 54 & my brother at 44, both from heart disease. With the help of my wife, who does the cooking, I have been able to get back to 203 from my high of 236. Since I no longer work full time, I go to the gym on the days I don't work & also walk a lot. So far I have reached 68 yrs. & feeling better every day. My wife tells me you can't do it by talking about it, you just gotta do it.

HEY!! Wait a minute!
You mean my clothes didn't shrink by just hanging in the closet??
Are you suggesting that the late night ice cream, cake, pie, and cookies made my clothes shrink?
I thought I was just shrinking in height.
According to the weight chart I should be 7.5 feet in height.

As you might guess from my handle, I am both big and old. Six feet, and topped out at 378. In January, my doctor told me I had mild Type II diabetes, and put me on metformin, at the lowest possible dosage. I was told to modify my eating habits, but felt OK so I didn't bother.

We were on a three week trip out west, and during the trip I developed blurred vision, terrific thirst, and loss of appetite. When we got home, last week, I was really on the ropes. Went to the doc on Monday, had the blood work done, and yesterday got the results. Drasticly increased medication, twice daily blood check, and 1600 calories a day, spread out. It's time to save my life! 336 pounds this morning, and I am rummaging around looking for some old pants to wear!

This is a great thread, and it came just at the right time for me. I may have to change my handle to just olddave; that's better than deaddave!

It looks like Evil One has accidentally formed a support group. We're here for you.

#1: This is not the time for a diet or an exercise program. This is a complete lifestyle change. If you view it as something you're going to do until you're feeling better, then you'll just be back later. I dove in and haven't looked back. The wife has a chocolate cream pie in the fridge right now that has sat there for 3 days as she has eaten a piece at a time. I've not even tasted it. Before I started this, I'd have eaten half the pie at least in one day. You can do it, but you have to decide you want to and then just do it.

Keep us up to date!!!!

Well, this post and a video I saw on break.com called "Inspiration" helped me get off my duff and start doing SOMETHING.... ANYTHING. Medical discharge from the National Guards that took away my Fed job but at least gave me disability retirement, I still worked up till a year and a half ago when the economy tanked, my job went with it. Evidently no positions out there for a 51 year old that has limitations on lifting, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, so unemployment is out and sitting in front of the computer seems to be the thing to do. Weight is up, along with depression, back hurts worse.... so over last weekend, I decided that sitting around pissing and moaning isn't helping, so after I take one kid to work, I come home and take each of the dogs for a walk. Can't take them both at the same time, one is 14 years old and is only good for down the block and back, the other is about 4 and would go all day if I let her!

Then a light breakfast and cup of hot tea. Take the other kid to her college classes, then back home to do whatever project I picked out for the day, maybe cleaning the back yard, working on the current engine swap car in the drive, or in the shop.

Fruit for lunch, and the ONE Dr. Pepper I allow myself a day, instead of the usual near-2 liter consumption I was at. Read one chapter in whatever book I am reading, then on the computer for two hours till time to pick up the kids. Make dinner for the working wife and family, watch some tv then me and the Missus take our short evening walk, then early to bed.

Its only been a few days, and while I am not measuring by pounds as of yet, I do know that I am feeling and sleeping better.

As to the Glucosamin, I know the medical community doesnt find any proof that they work, but I have been taking them for years, I get the ones at walmart that have the joint lubricant in them as well as a couple of other things for my arthritis and joints, and I can vouch that if it wasn't for that stuff I would be sucking down the prescriptions for the pain and sitting around like a zombie, so stick with it, it can take a bit for the benefits to show!

Dave, glad to hear you are getting lined back out.
Luckily it seems like you will be able to get yourself straightened out as back to normal as can be... whatever "normal" is. :D
I am on the lower dosage of metformin also, I am currently testing in the normal range... and am tempted to hop off of it for a few days and see what my natural state tests at.

Bitstream, looks like a lot of bigger people who have decided... or are deciding... to take their lives back. Puts a smile on my face.

Writer, strap the older dog to the pups back... turn it loose... then chase it down. :D

Jim

Weight check for this week... 260.
I ate more than normal and wasn't able to make my own food.
Its still a loss and I will take it..
Blood glucose was also on the lower side of normal this morning.
I'm marking this down as a good week.
