I got tired of how I looked and felt...

I slipped up a bit this past week. I have had a cold (sore throat, congestion, stuffed up head) for the past eight days, and went out to eat at a restaurant Thursday night and again Friday night. So, no real exercise, and eating more than I had become used to eating caused the weight loss to come to a screaching halt. I have been controlling the sugar levels by diet and exercise alone, and they are remaining (thankfully!) in the normal range.

I didn't eat pastry or sugar drinks like soda all week, but did eat a small amount of bread with a few meals, and had a few potatoes. Also, I didn't drink as much water this week as I did in the four weeks prior. Well, today is "get back on the trail" day. I didn't work this hard to start slipping back! I still need to shed another 30 pounds in the next 80 days. That is when I go back to see the doc.

I am on my way out to do a brisk 3-4 mile walk! :) Y'all keep on keepin' on. Lots of good people here. I wish you all continued success.

Kudos to you; I have great appreciation for those who do what it takes to lose weight. At the first of this year, having let myself go, I weighed around 250#. As in the past, I get disgusted and start watching calories and portions and am now 229# at 6'3". One thing is for sure, the older I get, the tougher it is to lose weight. I'll soon be 57 and do not want to have high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Quality of life is a very precious thing to me. Cheers

One of the big topics my dietician lectured on in her class was "rebound". Many people (myself included in earlier times) start a diet, get into it, and then stumble because of something like this and then, just fall off because they are off the diet and never find their way back. It's critical to not let this get you down and to just get right back on and shake it off. I lost 20lbs over the summer, but I had a number of tiny setbacks. I just shook them off and concentrated on getting back on right away. Good luck and keep going! You're doing great!

Thanks for the words of encouragement bitstream. I just got back from my walk. I was able to do the 4 miles that I set out to do in just under an hour. About 14 minutes per mile with some hills. Now it's just a matter of keeping up with it by doing it regularly.

I have never been fat, I do know Fit is a LOT more Fun.
Regarding walking, I have found the following make walking a lot more enjoyable:
1. Proper fitting footwear-doesn't have to be a $200 pair of hiking boots,
a well broken in pair of workboot or shoes work just as well. I use various combinations of insoles to make mine as comfortable as possible.
2. A cane or staff. To mee they feel good in the hand and they provide a bit of companion and diversion and on rougher terrain they come in handy.
3. A pedometer-fun to keep track of those miles.
4. A portable radio (how quaint) or an Ipad or whatever. Provides a little diversion.
5. I use a backpack, an adjustable weight belt helps burn off a few more calories, as you get used to it you can add weight to build strength and burn off calories.

Just reporting in; finally about over the virus I've had for the last month. I couldn't keep up my running as it was in my upper respitory. But, I'm back now. Ran Tuesday and was fatigued with a few wheezes. Ran this morning with no problems, lungs felt huge, knees fine, and lots of energy.

Also got interrupted a bunch with having to eat out the last couple of weeks; I tried "better" choices, but am back to my fruits/nuts/turkey on wheat this week and last. I actually not only wore an old pair of 34 jeans the other day, but carried IWB with them on! It was snug with the SWVE40 in there, but it fit and I was fine for the whole day.

No diet will work if you feel hungry all the time. Popcorn is a great low fat, high fiber snack. You don't need butter, you can find several low fat buttery spreads that taste great, or just spice it up with some other flavor. I like spicy almonds, too. Evil One is so right about portion control. A little junk food, ain't going to hurt you. A super-sized triple whopper value meal with bacon and cheese will. Sugar free drinks will certainly help. I can't believe how sweet a lot a people want their iced tea, it's crazy. I think most of our problems with weight in our country are directly caused from inactivity.

Went to my opthamalogist today, to check out the blurred vision thing. Found out that cataracts in both eyes had gotten to be a problem. He was ready to set me up for the first operation in two weeks, subject to my regular doctor's approval. Nope, have to wait at least three months to make sure sugar problems are under control. Eye guy can fit me up with specs to give 20/40 in right eya, and 20/50 in left, which may get me through vision test for driver's license renewal. Expiration is 10/21, and I would like to get renewal so I don't have to start over after surgery. I wouldn't keep driving, but I sure would like to keep the DL.

Talk about incentive to follow the diabetes guidlines!

I think small weight variations are to be expected and not worth worrying about. I remember 20 or so years ago I was lifting regularly. In one two month or so period I gained 4 pounds-and took an inch off my waist.

Evil One,

Good for you and good common sense. Rarely does anyone stick to a "diet". Whereas a sensible diet with an intake fo less food is the ticket. As we age we need a lot less food than we think.

I too am working on my weight, and as ordered by my doctor. It's tough, we have too much food and too many kinds now days and too much time to eat it all.

Stay the course.

I lost 35 pounds in the last year and that was not enough, they want me to lose another 30-35 pounds with lots of restrictions. Celery with peanut butter has become a delicacy, even an apple taste like candy used to. Of course the wife gets to have soft drinks and (gasp) french fries every day.Where did I put that Crystal Light?

Got a call from my Dr today, went last friday.
My diabetes is testing normal, my blood pressure... which has been high since my teens... is testing normal, my weight loss is outstanding, and my bloodwork shows that my cholesterol and triglycerides are right where they should be, my good cholesterol could be a touch higher.
So, in the last 4 months I went from the fast track to an early death to possibly living long enough to be a nuisance to my kids.

Blood sugar still higher than normal, but down considerably. Was at 326 on the scale this morning. the new glasses from the opthamologist got me past the DL eye test, but last Thursday, my vision seemed blurrier. Friday morning, I got out my old prescription. What an improvement! I can see better than I have for two months. On Monday I go to see the doctor again for a checkup.

Evil One,

Great job..

I was in the same boat, but a few years older than you (about 10) and been up and down in my weight since after a bad car accident 20 years ago.

I'm 6ft even.

Been up to 325 about 4 times, and down to 265 as many and yo-yo-ing inbetween till May of 09.

Got back down to 265 again last Feb 09 and back up to 295 by May and going up.

Again, diets got me down, but couldn't learn how to eat right and make better choices for the long haul.

My wife dragged me to WW, and boy did I learn. I thought I'd be happy getting down to 250 and keeping it off,AND would of called it a "success" if I got down to 250.
But I got down to 250 in 6months and thought I could keep going.

Got down to 210 and I had to refocus , thought it was getting tough, but made it down to 190 in a total of 12 months to the week.

And its been since May 2010 that I've kept it off.
I bounce around by about 2 lbs.. but so far soo good.

I travel a lot and the WW (weight watchers) program really helps and works (with real life food) and again, as they tell ya, it's not a diet but a way of life and helps you learn what's bad and how bad and how to make better choices.

My blood work was still good when I started, but was afraid to wake up one day and it would be off the charts...

Soo many other people in the program atest to how much better their blood work came back after being on the program for just 1-2 months.

It takes about 3-4 months for most to relearn and break bad and learn new habits.

I thought WW was a woman's things... and kept fighting my wife in going.. but it was worth every penny and every minute at the meetings.

While my injuries aren't gone, the pain from them are soo much better with about 135lbs off of my bones.... and other "things" ,,, it's like I rolled the clock back 20 years....

Got tons more energy, bounce back quicker.
If I had kept the weight on (and gained more - which would have happened that summer with the way work was going and using food for comfort), with how bad I was feeling nearing my 50's, I was afraid how bad I'd be going into my 60's.
