I have been out of small rifle primers for about a month. Now normally I just buy a tray of 100 at a time because I don't use them that much. After hitting 4 gun shops and not finding them when I finally did locate some I bought his last brick.

Until last year I always bought powder one pound at a time. When I started not finding my favorites in stock I decided to order an 8 lb jug of my two favorites. As I was paying hazmat fees anyway why not slip in some 5000 piece sleeves of small pistol primers? I'll use them eventually right.

So right now I'm contributing to the shortage by buying in quantities I've never bought in before and I think others are doing the same. IN my case though unless I buy a few pounds of different powders to experiment with I will not need to buy powder for most calibers I reload for the rest of my life.

So it will be interesting to see if things stabilize in 2009.

Join the crowd !! I've been stocking up on primers and powders for the past 18 months. Primers for 17.00 a 1,000 that stores are asking 30. to 35 for now. Powder at $17. to $19 a lb that's now up to $25. Brass and bullets spread all over the basement !! Red die boxes on the shelf that now number 20 ! Fun and games at the old reloading bench

Now they want $30 to $35 a 1,000. At last count the stockpile was around 12,000. Large & small rifle and large & small pistol. I figure I can buy 1 brick a year at current prices and stay ahead of the game for several years !

I'm afraid we are going to run into the same thing again when we had the "Primer Scare". Everyone bought up everything in sight for several months. A number of small dealers thought this was the "new standard" (lots of business) and when the market was satisfied everyone had a couple of years supply. The problem is, small dealers couldn't stand the drop off in business and went under. This area has never recovered.

We now have VERY few places to buy components and the prices are HIGH.

As a result, I have pretty much had to rely on Online Sales (not necessarily a bad thing). I order in bulk to minimize the hazmat fee.

When I see a good deal, I jump on it in BULK.

RE CCP powder: With the cold weather and everything else I have not chronographed anything yet. I still have hopes of working up loads for a couple powders.

$87 per 5000 primers, plus $20 Hazmat fee, plus Widners handling fee. If you buy in bulk it works OK. IF you can find them in stock. There are not many small rifle primers at the mail order houses right now.

Yeah, 223. I was in a gun shop late November looking for a cheap, left handed, groundhog/coyote rifle. Thinking Savage bolt in 22 Mag. Found a like new 223 H&R Handi rifle in the rack with a asking price of $160. The previous owner had traded it in on an EBR.

This is the first 223 I ever owned. The others I handled were just on loan from Uncle Sam

However I've reloaded for 22 Hornet, 222, and 22-250, so I guess it's about time I learned to load 223.

Mine is an older (2004) model with the 1 in 12" barrel that has an ejector. I use 27.5 gr of Varget with a 60 gr V-Max and CCI 400. However, it's extremely hard, with handloads, to beat the groups the 45 gr Winchester white box "varminters" will provide.

Mines a 2007 with extractor and 1-9 twist. I bought a box of the 60 gn V-max bullets and a brick of Remington 7 1/2 Bench Rest SR primers. Will probably try powders I have on hand first. 748, 3031 and H4895 being the three on the shelf I have in mind.

Accuracy problems are usually connected to barrel to wood contact on the forearm. I use a 1/4" ID X 5/16" OD washer between the barrel lug and the forearm to elevate the barrel up out of the forearm some. That usually works for me, if the lug has been welded on straight and if it has a flat surface for the washer to butt up to.

I just ordered 10,000 Wolf small pistol primers from Widners for $17.50 1000. I've been trying them in my rifles with no problems so I figured I'd save the $10 per 1000 for my revolver loads.
