I have been a bit discouraged about the possibility of ever adding to my little collection of Smiths given the recent trend in prices for the more desirable revolvers. But I recently stumbled upon this 25-5 with a "buy now" of $ 700. Now most all of the really nice model 25s in 45 colt with a 4 inch barrel have been going for well over a grand so I snapped this up. I have added a nice holster and a set of square butt combats I have been saving for just the right gun and here you go: The additional really nice thing about this revolver is that it is one of the newer 25-5s with the correctly sized throats. Finally I was delighted to see that the first 3 letters of the serial number were AVA which happens to be the name of my 4th child Ava who is 11 years old. She was just informed that she will be inheriting this one!

That's a good looking gun! Hope you're daughter has big hands And it's just a few bucks more than I paid for my 4-inch m66-2 on GB this past winter. There are indeed still some good deals to be found online. To be sure, I would have rather paid less, but at least such guns can still be found on Gunbroker. I essentially never see any desirable pre-lock/MIM models in my local gun shops at any price. Having said that, much to my surprise I recently stumbled on a model 629-3 5-inch "Classic" in great shape at one LGS, but they're asking $1200... which is more than it's worth to me at the moment.

About a year ago I found this 25-9 in a local gun shop for $750. I couldn't believe my good fortune or that no one had snapped it up before me. You did even better doing it online where the number of lookers are so much higher. I hope you enjoy your as much as I've enjoyed mine!

Yeah, It pays to look, and be patient the better prices are out there. But, I have a feeling that some models/configurations aren't gonna come down. Its too easy to look and see what others have paid for them.

Now I wish I had given more of my children 3 letter names! I have already taken this one out shooting and she is real accurate. I have a 25-9 with 6" barrel as well as a 25-9 with the 4" barrel. They are all more accurate than me. I have to say though that the one thing I like about this 25-5 is the smooth trigger. Both of my 25-9s have the grooved target trigger that roughs up my finger a bit when shooting double action. That probably means I need to shoot more to build up some callous on that index finger!

Back when... officers could bring guns in with proper ID... I had a smooth trigger fitted to several of my guns at the service center... like my 25-2.

Back in the late 1970s, the DeKalb County (Georgia) Police Department armed its officers with bright blued 4-inch Smith & Wesson Model 25-5s. There were over 400 officers working there at the time, and the order must have included several extra revolvers for "spares" or to equip new officers. These revolvers were equipped with red ramp front sights, white outline rear sights, and "service" hammers and triggers. When the agency made the change to Beretta Model 92 9mm pistols in the 1980s, the 25-5 revolvers were sold through a police supply dealer, and I bought one of the "unissued" ones in the box. On the end flap in the space for the grip description it shows "none," since Pachmayr grips of different sizes were fitted by the agency to account for the difference in the officers' hands. The serial number on mine is N765XXX, and, as one of the earlier .45 Colt production guns, it has never shot particularly well (4" groups at 25 yards are about tops). At the time these guns were issued, the agency used the factory Federal 225-grain lead hollow point ammunition as its "duty" load. As a side note, just before the transition to these revolvers, the agency had several justifiable shootings with their then-issued Colt Border Patrol .357 Magnum revolvers (a nickeled variation of the Trooper), and the performance of the .357s was perfect in every case. Once the .45 Colts were employed, however, there were several instances of poor performance, including (thankfully) one case where an officer was shot with his own 25-5.

Gunbroker is a auction? The discussion is about a gun and the price of that gun? When I point out a past auction with no gun or price of a gun and said auction has passed I get a email about the rules I have broken. What is the difference here? I really want to know or is the rules only for people like me and not for for the good old boys here,

If you are patient you can get lucky. I picked up a very nice like new 4" Model 15 a year ago for $325.

Sounds like this is a win-win situation. Since you took the trouble (and have the knowledge) to check the diameters of the chambers, you obviously plan on using this gun for what it was designed to do--shoot bullets! Let us know how she groups, and preferably, distance, group size, load specifics, with bullet size diameter, chamber diameter, and bore/land diameter. Nice gun, the kid will cherish it forever.

I recently acquired a 625-3, 3" gun for under a grand. Also pretty happy about the 940 for a little over 600. I don't know how good you all think that is but from what I have been seeing I think I did pretty good.

It just keeps getting better...

So I get an e-mail from the fine fellow who sold me this nice model 25-5 letting me know that he "found the box" and would I like to have it. All he asked for is the money to ship it to me. I of course said "why yes, I would like the box." Today, it arrived. The proper factory box with correct end label and paperwork and original tools (unused). I am happy.
