I see members posting photos of older guns that are in new condition and wonder how that happens. I run out and shoot mine right away.

Well, one came back to me in the past few days that was made in 1976 and remains in pretty much 100% condition with a near perfect box and all accessories. Unfortunately, the circumstances are awful.

I turned 21 in 1976. I visited my favorite gunshop one day and a clerk who knew I was newly legal for handgun purchases had saved something for me. A 5" S&W Model 10-7. He said the 5" isn't seen all that often. I thought it was cool and paid the $133 asking price. This was my very first handgun purchase made for myself.

I worried about my widowed mother living alone so I gave her the revolver with a box a 158 lead SWCHP by Winchester. She put it in her nightstand drawer.

For 36 years the gun lived in the drawer. She took it out once when she saw a man looking in the back window. She (waving the gun) and the dog (biting him in the butt as he went over the fence) chased him from the yard.

I knew that I would get the M10 back someday. I also knew that its return would be under heart breaking circumstances.

The Smith was returned to me on Christmas Day. When I am up to it I will post a photo with additional commentary.

Tough duty, SP. My heart goes out to you.

I took possession of my Daddy's Victory Model 27 years ago.
Mama has a Model 37, fired maybe 20 times and like new, box and all. She will be 93 next week, and is having some serious problems. As late as last week she told me she wanted me to take her out to my range and let her shoot her gun, "just to see if she still can."

Saxon I'm sorry you got that gun back. Back in May of this year I got Dad's M19 that Mom had been keeping for the last 13 years.
I miss them both while remembering the good times and I thank God for them everyday.
Prayers for you and your family.

so you bought your first handgun and instead of shooting it and showing it off, you gave it to your mother for protection. if that speaks volumes for me, i imagine your mom realized it as a gift of unselfish love, as well.
i'm sure she was very proud of you for that.

So very, very sorry to hear that your Mom has passed.

When my Mom passed 8 years ago I got my Dad's model 12 and his pre 64 .270 Winchester. Woud gladly give them and all of my guns back to see them for just one day!

That's one of lifes greatest losses when one loses ones Mother. Prayers to you for your loss.
