I had to pull the CW today

Thanks for the clarification.
As you've already said, it would be better to have just left, with your son, and go to a neighbor's house or public place. Nothing in the house is worth yours or your son's life. --I agree. Wasn't thinking at all.

So, some random guys removed and replaced your skylight? How strange. I wonder why they didn't wait for someone to come home before they started?--I think that they were trying to beat last night's rain, but I don't really know.

I'm really glad that it all worked out. Do you have any training beyond the basic CCW course?
--Not yet. I finally found one at a time that I can attend. Most are on weekday nights around here. But I've gotten clearance from the boss to do one that meets once a month on the same night so we can schedule it.

One more thing:

I hope I'm understanding this correctly. You are saying that if you have to shoot, it will be for effect and not a warning shot, right?

The idea is to shoot to stop the threat. Once there is no longer a threat, you no longer have the right to use deadly force.

I understand that. However, I figure that if I have to shoot, I'd better make the first one have effect; I may not get a second shot. I'm not trying to be some Wild West Dead Eye Dick.

This is absolutely right. Warning shots are simply a waste and won't help the situation at all. If you need to discharge you gun, you need to do it into the bad guy.

A local firing range is forming a chapter of The Well Armed Woman. The chapter will encourage women to train safety for their CWP and provide advanced training aimed toward women in a socially comfortable atmosphere. The local sheriff addressed the group at its first meeting. I have just learned about it and plan to join.

Slightly off topic but I know one thing I would not pay for that skylight

When they realized that they had removed the wrong skylight, or thought the new one was the wrong size, they replaced and recaulked or resealed ours.

If I am not home and my wife goes out and comes back to a burglar in the house, I want her to drive away and call 911. I don't care if it takes 2 hours for them to get there. I do not want her near the house.

I live in a small town but near a couple mid sized cities and a major metro area.

I had a care drive up my drive way only to take off when they saw me.

I had an "electrician", no markings on the truck, ring the doorbell and ask for a so called family.

My hoise is alrmed, too, with signs clearly showing that.

As you talk about this ordeal, you reference training many times....Thank you...100% of the mishaps and bad reputations guns get, would simply be solved thru great training...Training allows you to react, thinking may take too much time and leave others in harms way...I know the training I have received has saved lives...I know that the mistakes I made during training would have killed people in real life...

I read these posts with interest because I don't have any experience here but as a combat veteran in Vietnam who saw a lot of action I know what it's like to be in a fire fight. I know my Brenda can shoot 5 out of 6 at 7 yards in the bullseye but I fear her doing it for real would be a problem. It is one thing to be trained by professionals and having it drilled into your head that helps but that doesn't always seal the deal. I was a Squad leader and then a Platoon SSgt in Vietnam and there were guys in a fire fight who never fired their weapon. There were others that lifted their M16 over a fallen tree and they never aimed and emptied their magazines on full rock and roll.

It comes down to your inner will and survival instinct and the will to stop an eminent threat. I would tell Brenda if she came home and a strange car was in the drive way to call 911 and then move away from the house. If they left before the police arrived nothing I have is worth more than her and the police will deal with them later.

You are welcome! I am glad for the training that I have had, and I am also glad that this was not a "real" situation. I realize that assuming I knew who was driving the truck led me into a situation that could, potentially, have put us in harm's way. I'd rather be a rabbit and run away than an attack dog any day.

So--no assuming facts not in evidence.
Keep my cell phone handy and charged up! I often forget it.
Avoid situations, if I can, that lead to direct confrontations.
Get more training.
Keep learning from the wisdom provided on the S&W forum. [may sound cheesy but it's true]
Get everyone I know with a CWP to practice and train.
Don't leave the CW at home.
