I hate to say it but the S&W 22A is the worst hand gun that I have owned. I bought it about 3 years ago and never shot it. Reviews stated how accurate it was but I could never get more than 4 shoots off with out it FTE. The spent case kept getting stuck in the chamber. When it did fire, all shots were in the bullseye.

I shot it last week and got feed up with it. Brought it home and cleaned it from end to end. Also, polished the feed ramp. Today I took it back to the range with 3 different types of ammo. Same think, shell kept getting stuck on the chamber. Needed a cleaning rod to get it out.

On Monday I am calling Smith to see about sending to them to get fixed. Gun is a couple years old with less than 150 through the pipe.

On a side note, I just picked up a 6906 and shot it today for the first time. LOVE THE GUN!!!! I bought it for my daughter and SIL but after shooting it today, they might get a Glock, M&P or something else if they do not come and visit before I take back to the range.

Did you try different ammo manufactures and weights? some guns are picky.

Are you shooting lead or jacketed rounds? Or have you tried both? I found that my Walther P22 didn't like lead ammunition so I only shoot copper jacketed rounds through it.

I have one and love it, I have shot everything but Thunderbolts through it and never a problem.

I have a 22S from 1994, never had a problem with it.

I guess there are bad ones out there.

Great to hear about the 6906 and not so good on the 22 but I bet S&W will get it straightened out for you. Best of luck and be sure to let us know on the problem.

I do not think it was the ammo. The ejector was not catching the fired round and when the slide returned to the battery position, it did pick up the next round in the magazine. But the spent case was still in the chamber.

I called S&W about the repair and was told that the ejector and extractor was replaced on the gun. I should have it back sometime this week.

Hope to try it out this weekend.

Definitely keep the 6906 !! Give one of the plastic-fantastics to the kids, they'll never know the difference :D !!

I have a 22A, interesting to hear about the extractor. I haven't had any problems with that yet, but since the gun is discontinued, I might try to buy an extra.

I own a few 22lr firearms. All (including the 22A) are marvelously accurate, but the semi autos are all pretty picky with ammo. This is both pistols and rifles.
For that reason, I also own a couple cheap, old guns. A Springfield bolt action rifle and an H&R Sportsman revolver (9 shot topbreak with 6 inch barrel), and these are just fantastic for the money. They both shoot everything, and they force you to take your time and aim.

Was talking yesterday to a guy who had a frame crack with a 22A. He sent it in. They sent him an email, got his FFL info (SN would change). When the FFL called, they had sent a .22 Compact, explaining they they could not replace the frame, not having spare frames.

So I would speculate that spare parts have been dwindling for a while.

My experiences with a 22A was pretty much identical to the OP's.
Accurate, but constant FTE's.
Hope it comes back straightened out.
