and now I need to decide what to do, and I need your help.
I do not own an N-frame in .357. I had a six-inch 28 years ago, but I am one of those "if I can't holster it and CCW it, it's not a handgun for me" types.
Now, what does the collective group think of getting a shooter model 27 in some other barrel length and changing it out? Any recommendations? What will be the most cost-effective way to do this? Keep in mind I got the 3.5 inch barrel for a song....

Those N-frame 357s were monsters, so even if you find one that's exterior is pretty banged up, you'll still be able to get it looking good. Since your gun won't be original, I'd try to find the cheapest beater possible and spend the real money changing the barrel, rebluing it and tuning it up.

Thanks. I was leaning that way. I can get a 5" model 27 for about $600, but it's too nice to change, and I like the 5" as is, and would feel strange getting a really nice one and messing it up with a barrel swap.
So, now the real question: Where to find a beater model 27?

Aw, just sell it to me, and I'll put it on my Baumanized 28...lol

A five inch for $600? Sounds like a decent price, is it?

There are about 14 different ways to look at it but it boils down to do what makes you happy. I am not sure what I do with it other than what I wanted to do at the time. Larry

Squid: There must a table at a gun show somewhere with the perfect beat-up specimen you need for a lot less than $600. Obviously you don't care about the bore and what's some blueing wear or even rust if you're going to reblue. There's something out there for $375 to $425, so be patient and look around a little for a couple of months -- and then if nothing comes along by then, then Plan B ($600).

I'd just sell the bbl. to someone that needs it to swap out a worn or ringed one. If you want a 357 find the gun you want, in the condition you want.

I have one of those 3.5" barrels too. Being a s&w fan, and having a bit of bad taste for the .357 in the N-frame (despite its history) I find myself thinking of a non-pinned 25-5, with proper sized throats, with that 3.5" barrel rebored and fitted - and the frame modified to make it a pinned gun. Would have to make those that know raise at least one eyebrow, no? Kind of the ultimate 45 Colt packing gun.

Howdy Squid! You could look for an old 28 and have it installed. Or if you find/have another Nframe you'd like to modify I have a M27 cylinder I'm not using for anything. PM me if you're interested in buying/trading.

I think I have the donor. Auction Arms has the ugliest model 27 I have ever seen. It's in miserable cosmetic condition, and it will likely sell for $425ish. That's a start. I will get it to Matt Almeda in Suffolk and move from there.
Thanks all!

Well, VA is a great state, and today I bought a 3.5" model 27-2 in 98% condition. I have to go and pick it up, but you guys all got me sorted out. Looks like I will be able to sell the 3.5" barrel to a friend, so I will recoup some of the cost.
Pics to follow when I get my grubby hands on the thing. (have to pull back in to port first haha!)
