Never really felt comfortable w/online sales. Anyway the gun I purchased is a S&W 27-2 supposedly a 4 inch but looks like 5 inch(One of those uncomfortable feelings). Not too worried on that score though. Gun has some finish issues, light rust and may need to replace the red ramp plastic. but the goodyears have to go. Has TT and TH so probably had TS...Wondering which stocks it should have? I'd like to replace with original style (football?) other styles. I probably have 'em but...Going to be a shooter but you have to have a little pride ya know. It is going to replace a 27-2 5 inch I have. It's too nice to shoot. . Difference in serial numbers so I think the stocks would have been different. Serial is N360XXX according to the auction. Price was right, deal was real. So I bought it. We'll see when it gets here. The seller has another he'll sell(no auction) for a very reasonable cost but it is a 28-2. He wants 400 for...it is 6 inch with target stocks...don't know if they are original...S serial. Any help will be appreciated

My 1st online purchase was a 28 no dash. 1960 ship date, S serial #. Was very happy with it. [still am after approx 15 years} It came to me with Goodyears. Had to go. Over 90 percent of my purchases exceeded my expectations.
Congratulations on your purchase! Don't forget to post pics when you get it! Bob

There was a 28 no dash in this auction not in quit s nice condition as yours S 290XXX serial had what looked to be original stocks(diamond Magnas) but it went for a 370...so I stayed with the 27-2...it was a a bit cheaper

Who is the seller of the 28 you mentioned? Any contact info for someone who might be interested ?

Oh I am going to buy the 28 his price is delivered so I can't go wrong I guess. What I started out looking for was a nice 63... And I went into the farm Store buying chicken feed and lo and behold they had a Springfield Armory P-35 in stock. Keyword there was HAD. now I has it. I'm gonna have to sell something to fix the claw marks on my wallet area...Maybe the Marlin in 356 Winchester the S&W 2 1/2 inch nickle 19 or the Savage 99 in 250 -3000. Probably the Marlin

Date on the M27-2 you just bought is 1975 or 1976, so it probably did have GA Target stocks, and the correct ones would have football cut on the left panel. I wouldn't complain about the 5" barrel at all, it's more sought after than the 4", and for a gun of that period would be the catalogued length (3-1/2, 5 and 6-1/2 until 1979, then 4" and 6"). Of course they could be ordered with 4" and 6" before '79, but the others were D/C'd in '79.

As for the M28-2, standard stocks were magnas, but again, could be ordered with Target stocks. $400 seems terribly low for a "S" prefix gun, if in above average condition should go for almost twice that.

Thanks for the info on the 27- 2... I do have a 3 1/2 inch(my carry at one time) and a very nice 5 inch which I don't shoot. I feel the prices realized on the 4 guns I was looking at went low. As I said...they all had some issues with their finish. the 27 I won had some light rust in some areas bottom of cyl bolt cuts etc but one place on the rib near the front sight I'm going to have to work on. But also as I said the gun is going to be a shooter so no worry about those small problems...and although I promised myself I was done with bluing I still know how to do real rust blue and other metal work. Hate woodwork though. NO MORE checkering. For some reason the guns in the auction didn't all do as well as they should. The other stuff... ammo esp went mostly very high...and they had a lot...I feel the buyers were mostly local and aren't really into good revolvers. There was a Triple lock that went for 440 dollars...poor nickle finish. There was BP and tax of course...shipping for me also. 30 dollars to my dealer. I always keep an eye on the small auction there. Have done very well on bullets cases reloading stuff. I got a 1000 Winchester factory new primed 30-30 cases for 55 dollars at their last auction

Maybe the stocks from the 27 are on the 28 ?

Possible. My 5 inch 27-2 is serial N 1558XX...so earlier than this one and it does have Football GA targets...3 1/2 in has magnas serial in N442XXX range. My 57 is S 3200XX range and has Football. I have a set of Smooth targets and a couple sets of Football type. Have to hunt them down. I do have a set of Diamond Magnas from an older 28... they would work with the one I just got in the auction.....just looked in the stock box...I got nuff to cover me for a while. Even have a set of 29 round butt combats...That was a barker/biter...sold it with goodyears...thats what he wanted/needed

Congrats! I have purchased 28 firearms off gunbroker and they were all as good or better than described. Not sure what seller you bought from, but they should have reviews and ratings.

It wasn't Gunbroker. A small local seller back East a ways. I have never considered buying from Gunbroker. Too much competition making for high prices JMO YMMV etc,etc LOL

The prices you mention are pretty good, in my opinion, for nation wide auctions. I guess the smaller, lesser known houses have some deals. The 1936 K-22 Outdoorsman came from a house that sells more land and vehicles than guns. You can't ship tractors or real estate. We have a house here (North) that has a pretty active live audience as well as the usual internet crowd. The live bidders bring CASH.

The 5" M27-2 you have with the N155xxx (1973 or so) came standard with magnas, but could be ordered with Targets. The M27-2's from the 1975-79 period came standard as 3T guns.

The Target stocks with speed loader cut didn't start until about 1980-81.

My M57 shipped in June of 1970, but has a SN is just earlier than yours, S319xxx, indicating 1969 manufacture. Must have sat on a shelf for a while. Mine letters with the football Targets (no diamond, darn it), but I didn't get the factory stocks with mine

This is true, but they offer a lot of cream of the crop mint older guns. What gun auctions do you follow?

.

You know I have always kinda collected cream of the crop guns. When I got married I sold 66 Model 12 target guns(of just over 90) that hurt for a little while. Bought a house. Even C of C guns weren't priced crazy like now. I shot them all. I have had quite a few guns that I just won't shoot. Nice to collect but without use they kind of lose a bit. I once had a Winchester M-21 double in 410...didn't make many originals 75 or so. Never shot t after 11 years I sold it and paid the money on the farm mortgage. 8 years later I bought a super scarce New Ithaca high grade double gun in small ga...only made 6 or 7. First thing I did was shoot 50 skeet targets wth it. Have shot it since too...but talked with momma the other day and decided to sell it. Might buy a new pickup with the money. I bought this gun in the auction as I have another 5 inch thats too nice. It is oing to go. As I said...I've never bought a gun in an online auction till now... Live auctions mostly. I still find guns...C of C type. Bought a Winchester 64 Deluxe with a bolt peep over the phone with the auctioneer. Only 2nd I ever saw. Trying to say I guess is at this time of my life...I'd rather shoot 'em than just collect them. BTW found a pair of Winchester M-12s at the gun show a Super Field w/VR and a Really nice Trap...about 97-98% gun. Mid 50s...Might try to get 'em..tomorrow

I don't. But I do realize my ideas about collecting are different than other's feelings on the subject. Many enjoy the act of collecting. I have just come to the realization that I've always liked to shoot. And I just realized I have bought a gun on the internet. Many years ago I bought 2 auctions from a fellow in Canada on ebay. one was the forend and bbls of a nice O/U shotgun and the other was the stock and receiver of the same gun. I told him the receiver probably wouldn't make through Customs. He told me not to pay him till I got both packages. 6 days or so later they showed up by UPS and the two parts mated up perfectly and I had a nice Perazzi trap gun. Evidently, he had sold more than one complete firearm that way. I have seen quite a few guns advertised in parts on ebay over the years.

I can see someone selling a Model 28 4-inch at $400 in late summer 2023... but only if it's someone who has never shopped for or sold a gun online. Nobody active in this game would sell for a price that low.

$400 for that sounds like what a gun store might give you, right before they tag it at $950 and sell it for $875 plus tax.

Just doesn't really seem to add up. If a widow had it or some kid inherited it and owned it for 35 minutes and desperately needs video game and weed money, maybe $400. But not a typical price for anyone who buys and sells or owns and enjoys S&W revolvers.
