I was reading about a high school football team that is more like pro team and nobody will play them. Some quirks of demographics allow some schools to recruit from a much larger pool than others.

This school is a private school playing public school teams that can only select from their own district while the other team can select from the region. Their scores are like 78-0, 59-0 all through the season.

We had a case like that where a small town with a pretty large area grew into a densely populated area. The people in the town would not build another High School (badly needed) because it would take away from the football team that was winning nearly every game.

It made me think of something that happened a long time ago. I know that there are lot of people like this, but I'm still shaking my head..

Conversation between me and my Dad's workmate who dropped by. I was probably in the 10th grade.

Guy: What are you planning on doing after High School.

Me: Well, I'll probably go to college.

Guy: Are you going to play football?

Me: No, I don't think so.

Guy: WELL WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE?!?!

His tone was one of righteous anger. Why would ANYONE be stupid enough to go to college if they didn't play football?

Now, I think I'd tell him that I was going join the Ballet squad to get his goat even further.

We have a single Catholic parochial school in the Des Moines metro which shamelessly recruits the metro for the best football players. People grumble a bit but no real fuss. Just for giggles I'd like a list of how many starters are Catholic.

My town is experiencing massive growth and recently split into two high schools. Huge uproar over the decision, superintendent resigned and 4 school board members voted out but now both high schools field winning teams. One of our suburbs refuses to split the high school so they build extra middle schools and put tenth graders in them.

Isn't it just amazing..

Isn't it just amazing the the population would decide whether or not to build a new school because it might take some players away from their football team? No, I guess it isn't amazing. We live in the U.S. of Stupidity.

The decision on splitting high schools gets the attention of big mouth boosters who's lives seem to revolve around high school sports. School boards are easily intimidated.

This is true......

I don't think a majority of the people cared but the coach was very influential along with the big mouths boosters were able to hold up progress for many years.

I think a lot of people just don't realize how serious football is taken here in Texas, from Pee Wee on! I remember one year that a team from one of the local air bases was the dominant factor every time they played. I don't know about these days, but back in the day they flat ruled. Once they beat another school 85 to 0, & all hell broke loose. Front page articles about beating someone that bad, & how they should have slacked off after something like 50 to 0. This went on for a while as I remember...

We have a 'mercy rule' in Iowa. I think once a team gets ahead by 50 pts. the clock never stops to get the massacre over ASAP.

Any kid that plays football...

Any kid that plays football is looked on by their family and community as a potential pro star and it will be a big let down if they are disappointed.

The taxpayers of Ankeny could have saved a lot of money, a very wealthy donor wanted to build a new parochial school in Ankeny but locals got together and told him if he built the school they would ruin his son's political future.

It used to help Notre Dame.....not so much these days.....
Every Catholic kid who played football wanted to go there.

... comes to an end after a while. They found it necessary to restrict pro teams from unscrupulous recruiting. Then college. Then high school. And it's been shown that cheating goes all the way down to the little leagues. Like I said, should I have expected something else?
