Can you put square butt grips on a round butt frame? If this has been discussed at length in the forum can you point me in the right direction? Is it a perfect fit if it can be done? I am referring to the N frame model 29

thanks for the advice on round frame grips. If I can find square butt grips can I add or remove material to make them look presentable ....as in nice looking?

Look for "square to round" conversion grips for an N frame if you have a round butt. They are very common and will give you the square butt profile you are looking for without the ugly gap.

Unless you are a very talented woodworker, I would suggest not trying any DIY mods. I think you would be setting yourself up sadness.

Hey Wee Hooker, thanks very much for the advice. where would I find such a pair as you described? Sounds interesting and I don't like the gap on the so called " retrofit" type grips.

Trout, that's what I'm talking about. That's the ticket right there! Great idea. Now I just have to find a pair of grips like that and I'm in business.
Much appreciation

If you're looking for a project, convert a pair like Trouts. Those look awesome. Certainly economical if you already have a nice pair of SB donor stocks.

Otherwise, there are several domestic makers of round-to-square converstion grips that look just like authentic period Target Stocks, but cost less than genuine vintage stocks.

While conversion grips are the best, my buddy did put a pair of square butt grips on his round butt 29 and I did the same on my round butt 686. The grips are solid but you have a "butt crack" where the round butt curves at the bottom. The good thing is that you can find nice square butt grips at gun shows/shops that you try before you committ to a square butt grip.

Thanks everyone. At least you've given me options to work on. I just can't seem to smile when I see the big hole gap on the grips when fitting SB to RB
