I know this is an old topic: What year was this break top S&W .38 S&W Made? Serial Number 440249 Star at the end of the serial number on the butt.

I have seen that it was made in 1898 to after 1900. Thank you.

Hi There,

Your revolver appears to be a .38 S&W Double Action, 4th Model. These
were made from 1895 to 1909 (serial numbers: 322701 to 539000). The
Antique cut off point is serial number 382022.

The star at the end of the serial number indicates the revolver went back
to the Factory for repair and/or refinish. Usually there is a date stamped
under the left grip panel showing when it was received.

Cheers!
Webb
